Mac: iMac G4 not processing

Hi,

My Mac is not processing any new work. Last was received 4 Nov, completed 9 Nov. (Same for SETI by the way).

Checked the usual; file permission, latest version of manager and app, etc... My other iMac G3 is processing SETI with no problems. I have double-checked settings and they are the same for both systems.

What am I missing?

XP boxes running just fine.

Mac: iMac G4 not processing

First the obvious; in the Projects tab, select each project one at a time and verify that the buttons to the left say "Suspend" and "No new work", meaning that it's not suspended and new work is allowed. Then in the File menu, verify that either "Run always" or "Run based on preferences" is selected, and not "Suspend" - then that either "Network activity always available" or "Network activity based on preferences" is selected, and not "Network activity suspended". You may want to make those both "always" for now, just to eliminate one variable.

Assuming all of that is ok, pick one project (preferably Einstein, since you'll have the most help available here for that one...) and hit "Update". You should see "sending scheduler request" and "reason: requested by user" messages appear in the Messages tab, followed by a request/return message, and either a success message or a string of error messages. If you get an error, copy/paste (depending on version of BOINC, copy may or may not work) or type that message back here, and we'll try to help!

I checked the scheduler log. It appears that your Mac BOINC client is contacting the Einstein@Home scheduler but is not requesting any new work!

AH! Maybe all the stuff I said was based on a misconception... I assumed he's ONLY attached to SETI and Einstein, and thus has NO new work to process. But if he's connecting and not _requesting_ any, then chances are he DOES have work for some OTHER project. Thus - no problem, no error, just a matter of this Mac catching up on the debt owed the other project...

Went trough steps as

Message 19503 in response to message 19502

Went trough steps as suggested by Bill. Yes it is possible that the manager is trying to catch up to Climate prediction but the reporting date is May of next year.

Perhaps the fol extract from the log may help further;

Mar 22 nov 09:07:47 2005||request_reschedule_cpus: project op
Mar 22 nov 09:07:48 2005|Einstein@Home|Sending scheduler request to http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/EinsteinAtHome_cgi/cgi
Mar 22 nov 09:07:48 2005|Einstein@Home|Reason: Requested by user
Mar 22 nov 09:07:48 2005|Einstein@Home|Note: not requesting new work or reporting results
Mar 22 nov 09:07:53 2005|Einstein@Home|Scheduler request to http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/EinsteinAtHome_cgi/cgi succeeded
Mar 22 nov 09:07:58 2005|Einstein@Home|Deferring communication with project for 55 seconds

You will note the last line. Seven minutes has elapsed from the time of last entry and my pasting it to this post. No further entry or communication from the project after that 55 sec wait.

Unless you could think of anything further I will let it run for a few weeks before checking again.

Thanks.

The first line says that your local computer is not wanting more work, for whatever reason. The second line says there isn't a network problem. The third line is just a "safety valve", keeping some runaway PC from slamming the server every few seconds.

Waiting a couple of weeks is probably a viable answer, I think this will work itself out - but if you're interested in digging deeper, we can look at the Long Term Debts for the different projects and figure out exactly what BOINC is doing, why it's not wanting any Einstein work right now. Why not give it one more day - then if there's still been no Einstein, post back here and we'll look at some xml files. Unfortunately, I don't know of any utilities that make that simple on the Mac, but there are enough things "built in" to the Mac that it's not very difficult. If you can get TextWrangler, from BareBones Software (free) that is what I use for xml work on my Macs. TextEdit works, but makes me nervous. When you do report back, if we're going to dig deeper, please list how many WUs you have on hand for each attached project, and the shortest deadline date for each project - I don't want to overcommit your Mac and possibly cause any deadlines to be missed.

CPDN shouldn't be the problem - UNLESS this Mac doesn't run BOINC for much of each day. If when you started CPDN it was running 24/7, but now you've cut it back to a few hours a day, then it could be concerned about that deadline. This is unlikely, but if you look in the messages tab and see "running in earliest deadline first mode" or "this computer is overcommitted" then we can look into that.

Mac is on 24/7, access to Internet is not an issue. I will wait until next week before digging any further.

Thanks

Message 19506 in response to message 19505

Update: This morning I got flooded with work. From Einstein; 8 units and from Seti; 19 units. Looks like it needed to catch-up on CPDN!

Will keep you posted.

Thanks
