Lot of errors on previously flawless computer

This computer used to perform perfectly, but recently it's been generating a lot of errors.
I think it started when I upgraded BOINC to version 5.8.17, which is no longer available at the BOINC downloads page (and yes, I'm certain of the version number).
Downgrading to 5.8.16 and 5.4.11 has not helped.
I run BOINC by opening a konsole window and manually starting the application. If I want to halt it, I type CTRL-C, and it halts. (I do it this way because moving the mouse fails to halt the app, and running Gentoo, the PC frequently runs at full load for long periods without any user input). I think it's workunits interrupted in this way that have the problems.
Unfortunately, the large workunits (20 hours on this PC) that the PC has been receiving make experimenting with the setup difficult.
Anyone know what's going on?

Most likely this was caused by an error in the science app (not the BOINC client), this bug is now fixed in version 4.21 of the app. Your computer has probably already downloaded the new app and will be running fine.

Yup, it's displayed in the boinc manager Tasks view . You might have to widen the column where the app name is displayed by dragging the column border a bit.
if you are more into command line, execute
./boinc_cmd --get_state | more
in the BOINC directory and have a look at the "Application versions" section.

Correct, 4.21 is the Linux release.
