Let us hope they catch the people responsible for the Cutty Sark, and that they realise the implicatiosn of the felony they did.
Or let them pay for the damages and make them rebuild the ship, by hand.
Are they sure is was deliberate? For certain types of oils and stains, if the rags they're applied with aren't disposed of properly (by putting them in a metal bucket filled with water) the oily rags can undergo 'spontaneous combustion' from the heat caused by the oils/solvents evaporating.
Aren't ships like that pretty much handcrafted during preparation of the timbers and then assembly of them? I think an even greater tragedy may be the fact that such timber can no longer be had because there's not enough old growth forest left anywhere in the world. Is that true?

The problem of the "leaking roof" is relatively straightforward to solve and it will be replaced with one identical to that originally designed for the ship. Work is now progressing to find a source of suitable teak.
The wood has to be mechanically suitable, environmentally acceptable and without political taint! Technically Burmese teak would be best, but whilst this might have been acceptable a few years ago, and indeed has good, but unrecognised environmental credentials, it is no longer acceptable for such a high profile project. The search continues.

So do I.
She is still down with the opthalmic vets recovering after a deep eye rebuild operation. Her left eye burst due to a deep ulcer and an infection. Hopefully her natural healing will get her mended, and she may be able to come home for the week end.

It's good that about half of her was well out of harm's way. I learned she actually has an iron frame (it was one of the reasons for the renovation: the frame was eroding at a frightening pace). The last paragraph of one of the 'Key Stories' links explains some of additional the work that was going on:

Most of the ship will be closed to the public from 5 November for work to begin - involving mechanical cleaning and applying preventative coatings.
I'm looking forward to hearing about what the investigation turns up... Gorgeous ships the clippers, also looking forward to seeing the restoration eventually completed :)
