We got a quote of $1400 to

We got a quote of $1400 to remove that dead water oak and grind the stump.  Just waiting now for the company to schedule it. Am talking with a lawyer on how to force the squirrels to cover the cost.

In the mean while I've been passing my time boning up on the Linux command line, which is pretty fun. So far, I've been able migrate my /home directory to a m.2 SSD, control all aspects of a remote (local) E@H host (I have one monitor and keyboard for two Linux boxes), set up daily backups of my two Linux hosts with summary reports posted to my desktop, and automatically (re)set GPU card crunching parameters on each reboot/restart. Basic sort of stuff, but an engaging challenge for this old duffer.

Ideas are not fixed, nor should they be; we live in model-dependent reality.

That's very good, but I'm not sure I would call it 'fun', command line stuff can go REALLY bad in a hurry if you're not careful. I did a clone of one hard drive to another one and ended up cloning the empty one to the one that had stuff on it, I now use software so I can point and click so I know which is which. My problem was both were the exact same size and I messed up which was which.

Ha! That sounds like something I could easily do as well. Yes, I do worry about how easily things can go very wrong; my problem tends to be not that I don't know what I'm doing, but believing that I do and being dead wrong.

Then, of course, by "fun" I didn't mean, "Wheee! That was a jaunty breeze!", but more like, "Huh. I didn't expect that. I wonder what I did wrong?" and figuring it out after multiple attempts. To be sure, that migration of my home directory was by way of a failed system boot and having to dig out of it from the emergency root command line on an otherwise very black screen, while setting up simple reports from rsync backups via cron took me a couple weeks to get right. I manage to get by, however, with a combination of point&click GUIs, Terminal commands, and a console file manager (Midnight Commander). Most often I resort to the Terminal when i can't figure out how to do something by pointing and clicking.

You have far more patience than I do!! When I mess things up too badly I just wipe the drive and reload Linux and move on. To be fair my Linux machines are Boinc only machines so nothing is lost except wu's and they are just sent to someone else when they time out. I've gone to Solid State main drives on all my pc's except one and will do it at some point and I have the new ssd drive on the shelf the pc just isn't giving me any trouble right now so I'm putting it off, so it's easy and pretty quick to reload Linux on them. Most of my pc's still run Windows so spending time learning Linux isn't as important at this point. A few pc's really don't like the new Win10 updates, older parts can't keep up with all the new stuff they are trying to accommodate, but they are great crunchers so as they become too troublesome on Windows they get switched over to Linux. Meaning I WILL have to get better at Linux or buy newer parts for my pc's.
