You are a winner in our hearts. That must have been a helluva good parking spot you had your eye on.

The best. I believe there may also have been a bear involved. I couldn’t remember whether I was supposed curl up in a ball and pretend to be dead, or climb a tree.

When confronted by a bear the best thing to do is to be able to run faster than anyone else with you! Bears maul things when they catch them and peoples heads often up inside the bears mouth and when it comes out it has holes in it!! As for climbing trees bears are VERY FAST!! The couple things that may work is making yourself appear bigger and badder than it is, but if you wait until it gets close that won't work, the 2nd thing is a spray that they dislike intensely but most people don't have that stuff handy. A gun can work too, but a small one will just make it madder!!

I lived in Alaska for 3 years and they were everywhere so they taught us what to do in school. Bears don't like noisy things, they are not curious about strange noises and will run away instead of investigating, so the key in the woods is to be as noisy as you can be and they will give you a wide berth.

The last few months I was in Alaska we were moved from our house into a motel type place as it took a LONG time for our furniture to get from there to the next place, my dad was in the Air Force, and a medium sized brown bear came into the apartment building next to ours. A soldier decided his 9mm handgun would kill or scare the bear off so he came out of his apartment and started shooting at the bear, he saw the bear and ran in to get his gun and when he came back out the bear stood up and filled the WHOLE HALLWAYS with it's body!! He shot all 7 rounds at the bear only hitting it twice because the bear was walking towards him!!! He hit in the paw and the jaw and then it ran off, they knew he hit it because there was blood on the wall. The pro hunters tracked it down and killed it as wounded bears tend to go for the easier food sources and that's often people and their pets. When they killed it they found the two wounds on it, the soldier said he was shaking sooo badly he wasn't sure he even hit it as when it turned around to run away it was less than 7 feet away from him and he thought he was going to be eaten!! They found 7 bullet holes in the walls and ceiling but fortunately none went far enough to hurt anyone else. He had one target and it filled the WHOLE HALLWAY and still mostly missed it, bears are scary things when they are coming for YOU!!!

When it counts most people can't hit the broadside of a barn from 7 feet away.  That is why you hear of these incredible number of shots being fired by the police at a suspect.

That makes sense, I'm guessing Adrenalin can hit pretty quickly when needed.

Had the family out helping me

Had the family out helping me weed the garden today. It's been sadly neglected this year but I finally dug up the garlic I planted in the fall and planted some potatoes. The tomato and pepper plants look fairly dismal.

Doc said my wrist is healing fine. I don't need surgery but I keep a hard cast for another couple of weeks before moving ot a soft cast.

Oh, and I'm WINNING!

You mean you WERE winning...

BTW, got two 'Burning Bush' shrubs, seven perennials of various kinds, and a couple of climbing roses planted over the last two weeks. Been so hot I couldn't do more than one or two a day along with sneaking off on a 850+ mile each way trip to Michigan and back sandwiched in there too.

And if anyone tries to tell ya that Retirement is easy, don't let them kid you...doing more work than I ever did while employed.

WINNING!!!

LOL!!! The 'problem' with retirement is that everyone knows you are retired and thinks you have unlimited amounts of 'free' time so everyone tries to fill up your days with stuff!!  When I retired I was soooo loaded up with stuff to do I finally had to put my foot down and say 'no more'!! People volunteered me for things that I then agreed to do but they took up so much of my time I wanted to go back to work to get a break!! Finally after the first year I started telling people 'no' and some got mad saying' but you're retired and we REALLY need someone' and I would have to say 'yes you do need someone, just not me anymore'. Now I have time to do what I want to do and do the things that I have to do too, like bushes, trees etc that were all put off since I was way too busy doing other peoples stuff when I first retired. I also made a move in my home location which  helped some but I also had a whole bunch of new people saying ' will you do this since you're retired?'.

In my retirement I have found time to make mead for the first time and am now fermenting a second batch.  That stuff is GOOD and ridiculously easy to make. I've also made kvass, which is good, but a bit more fiddly, so I haven't stuck with it.  I always have a crock of pumpernickel sourdough starter growing in the 'fridge and routinely make volkornbrot, but have been baking that for years, though my production rate has slowed somewhat since I retired.

Speaking of fermenting, my sweat-soaked shirt is taking on a life of its own, so I guess I'll head back out and try to finish mowing the lawn before it gets really hot. Tropical Storm Barry gave the grass plenty of incentive to grow.

Ideas are not fixed, nor should they be; we live in model-dependent reality.
