These are two Tasmanian Devils at the sanctuary today. Next to the watering hole. Whose watering hole, you may ask ? Well, let's call them Lefty and Righty.

After much yelling ( a very evil sound, hence their name ) and posturing Lefty swiped Righty, a fair smack on the bum ! Righty ran away and Lefty had a drink. Standard Aussie pub rules then .... :-)

Lefty and Righty are products of a captive breeding program, so far successful, to restock them in the wild. A few years ago a meiotic driven genetic mutation causing a very fatal cancer dropped populations by more than ninety five percent. The driven bit is where the mutation is preferentially included in the germ cells, a nasty mechanism that causes the mutation to spread rapidly. Individuals usually live for about five to six years and normally breed at around fifteen months, so it didn't take long with that population turnover. It was traced to a single mutation in one female. Anyhows a combination of different lineages from populations in separate zoos has yielded a clean blood line. The descendants have been released onto an island in Bass Strait ( b/w Tasmania and the mainland ) which previously had none. This group will be the pool to ultimately restock Tasmania, but after they have learnt to live wild again.

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) Yes, they are evil little blinders for sure. Not cuddly. They are classified as carnivorous marsupials ( young raised in pouches like kangaroos ) and have been known to bite human fingers clean off. Just my type of mammal actually & so I sponsor the program to return these Darwinian "beasties from hell" back into original habitat. For preference they devour socialist greenie yuppies pony-tailed-eco-warriors small animals that hike ride camp write poetry live in the Tassie bushland.

I'm glad they found the problem and were able to isolate and exclude it, I know they aren't pets but they are feisty lil guys and need to be around for awhile yet!!

Kathryn it's good to hear your leg is improving, how's the wall?

Just read the bad news that GPU tasks have run out of work!  Surprised  So, I guess I won't be catching up to David, after all.  Frown

I have been crunching "Beta" tasks, (Arecibo, GPU), 1.52 on Exeter, (Win XP Pro x64 with EVGA GTX-760), for awhile...  That work will be done in half a day...  Andromeda, (MAC OSX with 2 GTX-750TI SC cards), may last two days on the Parkes BRP6 tasks in queue.

I hope Bernd, Oliver, and crew are able to get replacement work for GPU crunching soon.

I still have about 80 left to do since I always plan ahead here.

Don't worry as soon as Bernd has more GPU tasks ready I will grab the first 600 Cool

(I don't like the CPU tasks here)

I hate coffee.

Maybe start with a dessert coffee then, ie Irish Coffee, that way you get the flavor of the alcohol as opposed to the flavor of the coffee. There are tons of flavors of coffee now....donut, almond, french vanilla, cake, there are probably hundreds! I use cream and sugar in mine, actually I use Splenda, but just black won't work for me!!

It still tastes like coffee, and it's still disgusting to me.

Unless you get the REALLY expensive stuff you are correct! The REALLY expensive stuff has a few more steps in it's plant to drinking processing.

Morning all.  Seems like this

Morning all.  Seems like this day is cursed for my family.  A couple years ago dad had his gallbladder out.  Today my brother is having his appendix out.  Maybe I should go hide out for the rest of the day.
