Hi group (Cross Post Please read the entire post),
I am having a major problem installing and running BOINC. I recently upgraded my Linux OS to Ubuntu 21.04. At that time BOINC failed to launch, I then had no luck at fully installing BOINC without receiving an error message. I installed via command line. It returned a partial error message during installation and finished.
The icon shows up in the Menu but fails to launch. It reports the following error message: Failed to Change to directory var/lib/boinc-client (Permission denied)
I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail. I am stumped because BOINC was working fine on this computer Hp laptop running Linux Ubuntu 20.04. I am not sure if it did install as a service.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 21.04 from Ubuntu 20.10. I already had programs installed that I kept with the upgrade. Subsequently, I then installed BOINC Manager and the associated client software. I used the command line: sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client start to start the client for BOINC. I then connected to my Einstein@Home account using BOINC Manager. The packages loaded as usual. I started the screen saver (rotating astronomy sphere). Then within a couple of minutes my entire computer system freezes.
I have tested my various other installed programs for astronomy and they all work just fine and do not freeze my system.
My system is as follows
Intel® Core™ i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz × 4
7.7 GiB Memory
Intel® HD Graphics 4400 (HSW GT2)
1.0 TB HD
Ubuntu 21.04
64-bit
GNOME Version 3.38.5
Windowing System Wayland
To check the version of BOINC Manager I had to start the the program which froze my system before I could add the following:
BOINC Manager
Version 7.16.6 (x64)
wxWidgets 3.0.5
I need to add the following to my original post.
After adding some additional software to my Ubuntu 21.04 from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Cuda website I was able to install Boinc client and manager. I also am able to run the Boinc manager and add my Einstein@Home account to the manager. I am able to start by downloading packets and Boinc happily goes about processing them. However, when I start the sphere screen saver it doesn't function properly, When I click on Show Graphics the sphere appears BUT it doesn't rotate continuously as it should. The screen saver will remain static for a few seconds then jump ahead in time and remain static for a few seconds and jumps ahead in time and it repeats. Also, none of the set of command line functionality using the keyboard work.
So, I'm assuming that something I installed from the website I identified above either changed the OS or I need to add some additional software so that the screensaver works correctly.

I suspect that you may be running out of video ram. Look here:
https://askgeek.io/en/gpus/Intel/HD-Graphics-4400
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/hd-graphics-4400.c2471
The fact that it was released in 2013 and uses a shared system memory, and the fact that you are loading a relatively new operating system, you may very well be running low on system resources which are causing the screensaver to "skip" or "Jump".
My recommendation would be to either not run the screen saver or do without upgrading to Ubuntu 21.04. It is not a Long Term Support yet, but only has 6 months worth of support according to:
https://www.howtogeek.com/723039/whats-new-in-ubuntu-21.04-hirsute-hippo/
So, that's my recommendation.
Good luck!
