I am unable to connect to a project on this computer.I have successfully done so on 4 other pcs and macs.
When I attempt to connect I am told that the URL is not a valid URL. It is I have checked it for spaces, mistypings, etc I have tried cutting and pasting the URL.Tried variuos projects. I have deleted BOINC and reinstalled it, rebooted and hard rebooted. Did a trace which seems to show contact. Message indicates "couldn't reolve hostname[einstein.phys.uwm.edu]. tried shutting of firewalls, and changed passwords.
Any thoughts?

Stephan,

I have a silly question here, but maybe useful. Did you remember to include the "http://" in the url that you entered for the project address?

Michael

Stephen
Welcome to E@H
We recently had another new user with a similar problem. It turned out to be the firewall.

Stephen, I too would like

Stephen,

I too would like to welcome you to EAH.

Since you already have four machines up and running with no visible problems, it must be something unique to your fifth machine - things like firewall or networking setup spring to mind. It shouldn't be your account or password because they worked on the other machines, right? Because the message is about resolving a hostname, do you have correct networking parameters on the fifth machine? For example, do you have any issues with browsing to the EAH website on that machine?

Cheers,
Gary.

You might try exiting BOINC, then doing a "Repair" from the BOINC Installer.

What is the error code in the returned message? If it's 500, you may have run into that problem... and it wouldn't be surprising to see it hit one of five PCs, it seems to be very random, possibly somehow related to the number of routers and switches and things between your PC and your ISP...

I do not see an error code.
The message if get on the attach to project screen is, "Project not found The URL you supplied is not that of a BOINC-based project, Please check the URL and try again."

In the message field I get
Fetching config info from http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu
couldn't resolve hostname[einstein.phys.uwm.edu]
couldn't resolve hostname[yahoo.com]
couldn't reolve hostname[google.com]

The section I bolded is the key to your problems. I believe that this is indicitive of some sort of connection problem. If BOINC can't get through to a project, it will try yahoo and google to sort of test your connection.

Now _why_ you are having the problem is a mystery to me. Someone more knowledgable will have to help in this dept.

During the process of attaching to a project the BOINC Client Software attempts to communicate with the project by acting like a web browser and downloading a web page. If it fails to be able to download that special web page it attempts to download the homepage of both Yahoo and Google since they are known to be always online. The last check the BOINC Client Software performs is to check whether or not the computer is known to actually be connected to a network.

I know you said your firewall

Message 21258 in response to message 21257

I know you said your firewall is off but it sure looks like a firewall issue to me. Are you running Win XP by any chance? And are you also running a third party firewall? If so, check to make sure the Windows firewall isn't the problem. Sometimes the Windows firewall will turn itself on if you turn off a third party firewall.
