Hi!

Apparently back in 2015 there was a problem with Intel GPU drivers that we overcame by limiting the original plan class ('opencl-intel_gpu-new') to older drivers and building a new application version that we published as 'Beta test' version, such that people could select which version to run themselves. Unfortunately we have been busy with other searches / applications since back then, and the status of this app (version) was rather forgotten about. With the appearance of more and more Intel GPUs (and their increased productivity) this became a problem: With E@H results of 'Beta' app versions will be 'validated' to that of 'established' app versions (non-Beta), and there were not enough tasks kept in the 'work array' of the scheduler to pair a 'Beta' taks with a 'non-Beta' task for validation.

As the details of the 2015 driver issue left my memory long ago, I consider it solved nowadays. Therefore we promote the previous BRP4 Intel GPU 'Beta test' app version out of 'Beta' status (new plan class will be 'BRP4-opencl-intel_gpu-nd').

On top of that, we'll test running FGRP on Intel GPUs. There will be a FGRPB1G App version 1.22 for Intel GPUs, currently flagged as 'Beta Test', so you may opt in/out.

Hi Bernd, Great to hear!

Hi Bernd,

Great to hear! Will you consider better support for the intel GPU on the Mac as well?

Thanks

Sam

Last time we tried (must be years ago) the Intel GPUs on Macs weren't usable for even our least demanding search (BRP). We may have a try again these days.

I tried the beta version of

I tried the beta version of the BRP4 search several months ago on one of my PCs, which has an Intel HD Graphics 630, and 50% of them were invalid. Last week after reading this I tried one of them again and it was also invalid. However the FGRP search seems much better and the three that have completed were all successful. But man, the CPU based Gravitational wave tasks really slow down when that's running.

I just tried a few GPU tasks

I just tried a few GPU tasks on my i5-6200U laptop.  The BRP4 tasks all errored out at 99.999% done; of additional note they consumed 2 CPU cores fully while running not the one claimed by their default config.  This is a regression from several years ago when I got the laptop and the tasks would complete but often fail to validate.

So far the FGRP tasks all appear to be validating successfully though.  Assuming this continues I think I'm done running seti on it.  (Previously the only GPU app that would validate with it.)
