I've updated my notebook to Windows 8.1 and then ran the standard Windows update. One of this windows updates installs a new version of the intel graphics driver. After installation of this windows version driver, the GPU Apps didn't work anymore, with different errors depending on the Boinc version (no work progress with boinc 7.0.64, or calculation error with boinc 7.2.26).
The solution was to download the latest driver from the intel homepage (9.18.10.3257) and install it. But during installation the message occurs, that there is already a newer driver installed (the one, which came from windows update). So you have to confirm, that you want to install the "older" one.
After the installation the GPU apps run successfully.

Which GPU? I tried a few old copies of the intel driver for my HD4600 after it didn't work in 8.1, to no avail.
I'll try the version you suggest as i don't think it was one I had on hand.
For me, the apps were "running" according to BOINC, but GPU-z showed no utilisation. BOINC % didn't move, then a while later i'd get a computation error.

Seems there is no driver on intels site for HD4600. For my HD 4000 there was one.

Got that driver version, and it works! Thanks. I'd had 15.33.5.64.3316 (10.18.10.3316) as my driver (latest from intel, only 8.1 certified version).

I've been told to use the OEM

I've been told to use the OEM version provided by HP computers for my setup. I'm currently using 10.18.10.3325 and I am getting errors having to do with the Intel driver igdkmd64.sys. The problems started after I upgraded my computer from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. I tried installing the new driver (the current one I'm using) and have that problem. I could try to roll the driver back and see if it improves the situation, but I am also having trouble running non-Einstein Intel-opencl workunits from albert@home, conjecture@home, and seti@home beta. Instead of compute errors the driver seems to crash when the screen goes off, and when I wake the screen the computer reports that the driver crashed and recovered. Then I have to stop boinc and start it again to get the workunit progressing. I've cancelled all Intel-opencl workunits for all projects until I can sort the driver problem out.

Did you try the drivers reported as OK in this thread? Mostly those OEM drivers are pure nonsense, meaning they're just the same with a different label slammed on.

I'm planning on doing that later tonight after I wrap up some other work. I'm pretty irritated with this driver situation, and it doesn't even seem to matter if I'm running a Intel-opencl task or not. The driver intermittently crashes when the computer screen sleeps whether or not I'm running Intel GPU based workunits. Frankly I'm afraid of discovering this is a Windows 8.1 issue, and not an Intel driver issue, since I ran hundreds of Intel based GPU workunits from several different projects with Windows 8 with absolutely no problems at all.

As an FYI to the devs here, my windows 8.1 just re-updated (to 10.x.x.x) my drivers for my intel on me and i noticed that the Collatz project's intel apps kept running seemingly fine.
I have reverted again as Einstein is more of a focus for me.
As an FYI to users: running the 9.x.x.x intel drivers in win 8.1 works for compute as noted, HOWEVER, i have been getting application crashes in many .Net managed apps when a tooltip (of all things) should show. This crash, despite repeated driver reinstallations, points to the Intel drivers when looked at in windbg (visual studio 2013 crashes with the same issue and so can't be used for debugging...)

I've tried reverting my Intel driver back to the 9.x.x.x driver and it corrupts Internet Explorer and some other programs graphics with strange X's appearing through boxes drawn on the screen. I've also tried using the 10.x.x.x driver from the Intel site, but it doesn't really solve the compute problem. My guess is that the 4th gen Core processors really don't like the previous 9.x.x.x driver when using Windows 8.1 (even though I've always been able to use older drivers on newer hardware before with minimal problems). I still have the problem with the driver crashing and recovering from time to time as well. Its funny because Intel has a multiple page forum asking for comments and experiences from customers using the new 10.x.x.x driver with Windows 8.1, and there are 31 pages of comments!
