Flatrate means he can use dial up but not pay by the minute as we have to do.
You pay a fixed amount of money and then you can go anywhere, anytime.

A bit like ADSL/Cable, but then on a real telephone line (not having a separate dataline connection).

"Box" is another word for the computer, the whole PC.

For a first experiance, I would suggest Ubuntu (with Gnome) or Kubunto (with KDE). The difference of these two is just the graphical interface. These two seem have the best installer and as I have read, you can start them from the CD without installing to the disk.

Thanx i will look for them. Which one is more graphical, looks the most like windows? And is it difficult to install new programs (like BOINC)?

KDE is more similar to Windows, but gnome is fine too.

No translation. I can get an idea when reading very, very, very slow :-)

You are from austria: so you read deutsch, it is a lot like Holländisch

Yep! But I currently live in Mönchengladbach, not so far away from you :-)

Fixed price, no traffic limitation no time restrictions. Actually I am online all night & day with just a small gap when my provider decides to give me an new IP address.

And it is ADSL.

And box ... well, this is already explained ;^)

AHA! 'the Box' means computer

Message 25362 in response to message 25361

AHA! 'the Box' means computer too! OK ! In english 'the box' also means the television (the tube)! Like in the song 'living in a box' from the UK band 'living in a box' (1987).

Mönchengladbach is only 262 km (2h34m by car) from my home in the far south-west of Holland (=the Netherlands) (on the coast).

But this is all very off topic : maybe we can all chat in a (chat)BOX. I have my own, on my "Vliegtuig-pagina" communitie (about small airplanes). Please have a look at :

See you ;-)

RE: The "LAN" activity you

The "LAN" activity you are seeing is LOCALHOST only. It is not going out to the world. The BOINC Manager and Client talk TCP/IP. If you are watching Zone Alarm (or other firewall software), and you look futher into it, you will see it's just the Localhost that is talking.

@ pooh bear 27 (& all the Others): Why does BOINC Manager and Client 'talk' TCP/IP when i (the user) am 'active' (and Boinc Einstein or Seti are removed from the memory) ??

They keep in communication in case you are making changes and stuff. BOINC and BOINC Manager only talk TCP/IP, nothing else. So they stay in constant contact.

The person next to me is the infamous Dr. Demento. A radio personality that is syndicated (but hard to find), and plays a 2 hour block of "Crazy Comedy Music", usually late on a Sunday evening if you find it locally (he is streamed, but that's also hard to get cause it fills quick). He helped get "Weird Al" Yankovic his start, and has been on the air for over 35 years. You can learn more at www.drdemento.com.

The stats I use come from Mundayweb's site. There are other sites you can get them from.
