How do you know?

Where did you go (to find out)?

Do I have to run the Notifier add-on everytime or just hope I see one of those posts floating by on the boards stating another version is out?

Got most recent (public, safe) BOINC release?

whenever you connect to project to download or upload results you will be notified by your boinc client in messages tab (it will say that the new boinc version is available) - at least that's the way the windows client works

Boinc client will notify you

Boinc client will notify you once all older work units have been exhausted. This can be several weeks after a new CC has been released.

I love the Boincnotifier and run it at least once a day now.

I do suggest that the average user wait at least one day after the public appearance of a new CC before upgrading. You never know when a bug will accidentally creep into even the latest release.

Personally I live on the edge of the newest Alpha and I am prepared to get burnt.

Questions? Answers are in the BOINC Wiki.

If you want to keep your

Message 4206 in response to message 4205

If you want to keep your computer busy while waiting on Einstien WU's then yes, you will need to connect to another project. Or, you can just leave it alone and it will sit idle, while it automagically querries the server to see if there is any work available. Eventually, the server (like any good parent) will get aggrivated with the little kids constantly bugging Mommy and she will say, "Would you kids out out of this house and go play outside!!" and then she will make up some more WU's and throw them out for the kids to fight over. The kids who are closest to the door and who can run the fastest will get the most WU. The other little kiddies will just be left out in the backyard crying. The big kiddies with the WU will tease the little kiddies without any work units. the little kiddies will start crying and go running to mommy again saying... "He got a work unit and I didn't! I want a WU. you NEVER give me any WU's. You ALWAYS give Him the WU's." The Mommy will say, "You should have been here sooner. I don't have any left." And she will go inside to try to make some more WU's. The little kiddies without WU's will have to have to go to the neighbor's house (like SETI ; or LHC ; and CPDN ). Once at the neighbor's house, the little kiddies will have to beg and borrow for work units from them. If they are nice enough, they will let the little kiddies in to play.

Ok, so I got just alittle imaginative. LOL I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed making it up. LOL

lol, love it, you made all crystal

since I'm a (big) little baby, guess I'll just sit around for scraps instead of potentially going thru the samething at the "neighbor's house"

weird, because it worked all day everyday (cause I sit at my box all day) since I downloaded it last week, and for that, I get thrown out the house lol

oh well, guess I'll just let it do it's thing since it doesn't affect my computer experience anyway

thanks for the info g/l

Why is there no work for some people?
What I see from my WU is that I have 10 of them done but most of them are not verified because they are "unsent". In other words, it looks from my "pending credit" list and result pages that I have gone through 10 WU that would need 4 verifications each (40 WU's) but 8 of those 10 WU that I have finished have not been sent to anyone. That is I can see 25 unsent WU just in my pending list. That would seem to say that there are WU in there somewhere for people to work on and verify but they never get sent. And at the same time there are people out there wanting more WU's.

What am I missing?

It could simply be that the

It could simply be that the page you are looking at has not been refreshed on the server, therefore is "old" data. The pages on the server get refreshed at different rates. Some on the order of instant, some on the order of minutes, other on the order of hours.

I wish there was an easier way to know if we were up to date vs manually checking, i.e email notification! Yeah, that's it, for answered posts too, that's the ticket!

You can get an email

Message 4211 in response to message 4210

You can get an email notification about answered posts. In the upper left hand corner of this page you should see two links. One says "Subscribe to this thread" and the other says "Reply to this Thread". If you click on "Subscribe..." then you will get an email notification everytime someone posts to this thread.

As far as being notified when the core clients are updated, the projects do publish a notice when the Public Release of the core client has been upgraded. It is usually posted on the front page of all the projects. This process usually happens on the time frame of weeks to months.

The other core clients are developmental clients. By all rights, they are supposed to only be for alpha and beta testers. These clients sometimes get updated on a daily basis. They are possibly buggy and are definitly only there for testing purposes. It would really cause the developers headaches if EVERYONE upgraded to the devel versions. The issues in those versions change on a daily basis. If someone is truely that interested on being on the bleeding edge of BOINC then it is their responsibility to check the download page.
