select properties from right-click on background, tab:screensaver, select 'Boinc' from the dropdown, disable checkbox (?logon screen?)
be careful to use it if you have ati graphics - you might want to wait until the current WU is finished before you try it.

From the above procedure I go from "loading the screen saver" to a blank screen
You can also try clicking on the WU as it's processing and select 'show graphics'. But as has been mentioned, 4.xx versions have problems with ATI graphics cards on some systems.
Recently I updated to MS DirectX 9.0. This fixed the clicking at "show graphics" problem. But screensaver is still not working. At least I donĀ“t crash my WU`s anymore. This might be a step into the right direction.
