Is it worth it to finish wu that have passed their expiration. einstein has a problem calculating the time required for finishing. It estimates 5 hours but the wu's are taking over 10 hours to finish. all other project overestimate time. Setiathome estimates 6 hours but takes 3 hours.

I'd have to say it depends on how close you are to finishing. If you look at the Work Unit ID you can see how many others have submitted results so far and whether the WU has been sent back out again. If you can finish it and still be in the quorum, I think you still get credit, right? Even though the deadline has passed?

Yes, as long as you return a valid result. In this case, you should be included along with the re-issued Result when it comes back in.
I am not sure why you are seeing that low of a finish time for your results. Mine start out with a 7 to 8 hour estimate, which gets updated to 10 hours after it runs awhile. And even though I run 5 projects on almost all my machines I have not blown a deadline, in, like, forever.
Okay Paul, thanks for

Okay Paul, thanks for confirming that.
I've not yet come close to a deadline, as I setup my resource share to complete one Einstein per day (and 4-5 SETI), and at most I keep 2 days worth lying around. However at times I've noticed I have a lot of pending credits because of re-issues, possibly because the others returned invalid results, or abandoned the units. If I had been close to deadline on those units, I would have had lots of extra time if I needed it.
I must be lucky because my completion times have always been pretty accurate. It says it'll take about 8:15 for a work unit when it starts, and that's about what it takes.

I keep my buffer length to a number below 1 day (right now 0.5 days) so that I don't get into contention that much...
The good news is that we seem to be back to perking along with all projects alive and well. though LHC@Home is starting to worry me a bit as we are at 80K WOrk Units and falling ... :(
I will also say you should not count on others giving you room ... :)

Oh, I'm quite happy with just Einstein and SETI. :)
If by chance there's a situation where neither project has work I'll just have to live with that. I guess that's what I don't understand about all the fuss concerning SETI outages. Even if it's the only project you run, would it REALLY be that horrible if (god forbid) someone's CPU cooled down for a day or two? Good lord, you'd think the world was going to end if these folks didn't get their workunits when expected! LOL.
Now it seems like everyone's yelling "set your cache's high!" which to me isn't a good thing either. Oh well, to each his own I guess.

I got zero credit for the expired wu. I lowered my cache setting and it downloaded a new wu. The new one is a test unit and will take longer too.

I tried to lower my cache setting to 3 days but it didn't work. I keep getting new wu's. still says 5 days.
