David's reply is correct. So there isn't any "error" recognizing Apple's M SoC in BOINC < 8.0, it just uses OpenCL to do so and reports it as such.

Rest assured, we're still shipping the best application versions we have for any given platform, regardless of how BOINC reports it. In case of the BRP GPU app that means a native Apple Silicon version, not OpenCL, regardless of using BOINC 7 or 8. But please make sure you use at least BOINC 7.24.3.
