Einstein intel_gpu tasks postponed with not enough free CPU/GPU memory available

    I'm running BOINC 7.6.33 on Windows 10 64 bit.

    I have a brand new I7-7700 PC with an NVIDIA 1050 GPU and an Intel HD Graphics 630 GPU. I've got 32GB of system memory and 4GB of NVIDIA graphics memory. None of my Einstein tasks for the Intel GPU ever get running. They all say,

    "Postponed: Not enough free CPU/GPU memory available! Delaying next attempt for at least 15 minutes...".

    The Intel Graphics Settings app tells me I have about 16GB of memory (1/2 system memory) available for the Intel GPU. There are no applicable settings in BIOS.

    The log data suggests to me that it thinks there are two instances of the intel GPU.

    I've created a cc_config.xml file to gather debug data on the problem. I’ve tried specifically excluding one or the other of the intel_gpu devices, but to no avail.

    Any thoughts?

      maybe the cpu and other stuff you are running is taking most of that and there is not enough memory left for the Einstein tasks. Try stopping everything except Einstein gpu tasks and see if that gives you enough memory to run them.

        I checked system memory and it shows 24GB available. BOINC and its tasks are pretty much the only things running on the machine.

          I tracked it down to:

          Couldn't create OpenCL context (error: -5)!

          Which says the openCL function clCreateContext() returns the error CL_OUT_OF_RESOURCES which according to the OpenCL documentation means

          There is a failure to allocate resources required by the OpenCL implementation on the device.

          Which does not necessarily mean that there is not enough memory. It's possible that the Device is not accessible for computing because it is busy otherwise. I found a host with a very similar setup that has no problems: https://einsteinathome.org/host/12513582 the apparent difference is that your computer says it has 2 HD 630.

          You should disable the second HD 630 using a cc_config.xml entry since you should only have one physical HD 630.

            Thanks. I thought along the same path and already tried excluding intel_gpu 0 and then intel_gpu 1. It just came back with a different error.

            Excluding intel_gpu brings a flood of these messages.

              Those are just warnings because you have coproc_debug enabled. This should clear itself when your cache is not so full or you disable the flag.

                Sadly, the work units that are for the intel_gpu never get run. They get dispatched but immediately stop and go into this postponed state that I've never encountered before. I end up with scores of work units that say:

                Postponed: Not enough free CPU/GPU memory available! Delaying next attempt for at least 15 minutes... (0.5 CPUs + 1 Intel GPU)

                They never get run. I have 32GB of system memory, so I don't think there is a shortage The Intel HD 630 uses system memory, so there should be no shortage. With all my other BOINC tasks running, it shows I have more than 26GB of free memory.

                  I would suggest to try to exclude the other intel device. Since you should only have one device at all there seems to be something wrong with the CPU maybe a manufacturing problem. The RAM is not the problem, it's usability of the device that is producing the same error code as not enough RAM.

                    [solved] I decided to take a chance and backlevel the custom HP device driver for the Intel HD 630. It turns out that the older version of the device driver was able to recognize and present GPU 0 and GPU 1 to the Einstein applications. Now I have 2 concurrent streams running through the Intel HD 630 and one stream running through the NVIDIA 1050. Now the system is fully utilized and I am happy.
