Over the past week of my first runs of Einstein on OSX Tiger, I have experienced repeated instances of BOINC hanging in the middle of an Einstein WU. This is not happening with Predictor WUs, which are flowing smoothly on the same system. I am using BOINC Manager Advanced GUI 4.35 for OS X.

The symptoms are only that the CPU time stops progressing (until system reboot), and BOINC does not switch to other WUs (until system reboot). I can tell when an Einstein WU hangs by noticing that the cooling fan stops.

In any case the Einstein WUs are completing successfully (eventually).

E@H is hanging BOINC on Mac OSX Tiger

The Tiger is running nice here ;-), but I 'am still using the command line 4.19 version of Boinc. so the prob's will be related with the GUI manager, which have been cause for troubles under more OS's.

Following up on my May 7 post:

(still using the same system as described before)

An additional symptom I'm observing is that sometimes E@H WUs are "hanging" BOINC 4.35 in a "partial" way. I'm attached to E@H and Predictor. The E@H unit will sometimes, after several successful swaps between the the project WUs overnight or longer, not stop running while BOINC has switched to the other project. I found this out by coincidentally looking at Activity Monitor. I see CPU load numbers in these typical ratios:

Process Name     %CPU
mfoldB125_4.24_p [Predictor WU] 40.00
einstein_4.78_po       38.70

This is only happening with E@H WUs, never with the Predictor WUs. After system reboot BOINC goes back to swapping WUs normally (E@H CPU load goes to 0 when Predictor WU is running).

Update for BOINC 4.37,

Message 11399 in response to message 11398

Update for BOINC 4.37, following up on my May 11 post in this thread:

BOINC 4.37 still has the problem of E@H WUs occasionally freezing the whole BOINC system (until system restart).

Following up on my May 11 post about E@H WU continuing to run even when BOINC thinks it has paused the WU in order to work on a different project:

Same thing happening still on BOINC 4.37. Also, I can simply exit BOINC and then restart the BOINCManager.app in order to kick it back to normal operation (so I don't have to reboot, after all).

There is definitely a

There is definitely a problem, but it's deep down in the system (currently we suspect the internal function __vfprintf() causing a deadlock when called from within two threads). This problem is not limited to Tiger, I see it on Panther, too. But it tends to happen more frequently with newer clients. We are chasing it...

I've noticed it too a couple of times also. Not a serious problem but an annoyance. Good to know you are aware and chasing the bugs.

Heads-up: Apparently this has been fixed now. Should be better with the next set of Apps, which is expected for next month.
