The European Gravitational Observatory
EGO
has issued its 3rd newsletter, with interesting cost comparisons between big science projects and other big projects, both civilian ad military. But the Messina Strait bridge will not be built,the zone is highly seismic due to a collision between the African and the European plates.

Thanks Tullio for pointing out this interesting newsletter. I really enjoyed the article on the history of gravitational wave research(Resonant Bars).

Thanks Rod. I had been following Joseph Weber's efforts since the Sixties as a physics and astronomy editor at Mondadori. They were considered more or less as a curiosity from most physicists at that time. Now I am following the IFOs staffed by physics top guns. Cheers.

That's exciting news, Tullio. Do you know if there will be a detector e-log (similar to LSC) where we can look in on the progress from time to time?
I was looking at the link to VIRGO that you posted, and noticed that there's quite a difference in the seismic isolation system (compared to that of LIGO). The isolation towers are remarkable:
(Click the image to link to the page it came from.) It was stated there that, “...the environment of the VIRGO optics is much quieter than what could be achieved in a spacecraft orbiting the earth. That's remarkable, indeed!
[and a belated Happy #72 to you! :) ]

Thanks Chipper. I see a logbook in the VIRGO home page. I also saw the name of Ms.Papa among the speakers. That sounds good for us.

)
VIRGO has finished its first science run on October 1. A meeting LSC-VIRGO is scheduled in Hannover this week but its program is password protected and I was unable to see it.
