I just registered yesterday and received 2 work units in the process. What is the proceedure for fetching new jobs? I've tried everything and nothing seems to happen.

Hi Ford :).

BOINC will do it all for you automatically. You actually have three results at the moment with two finished and credited and one in progress. I notice that your one in progress was actually downloaded about 1 minute after your second result was reported which suggests to me that you don't have an "always on" internet connection. BOINC will normally download a new lot of work before the previous one finishes if there is a connection available.

Do you know about browsing your results and setting your preferences on the website? If you need some suggestions about setting up BOINC so that EAH doesn't run out of work with dialup type connections, please tell us what sort of setup you have.

Anyway, welcome to EAH. It's good to have you on board.

Cheers,
Gary.

Thanks Gary, and you are

Thanks Gary, and you are correct, I do not have a permanent connection and noticed just after I posted the first message that there appeared to be a download in progress.

One more question if you don't mind. I was doing some work for another project 2 or 3 years ago (it may have been SETI) and it had the ability to dial up my default ISP whenever it needed to communicate. Does this program have that ability or if not is it possible to download several jobs at a time.

Thanks,
Gary

When you went online to post your message, BOINC would have woken up and taken advantage of the fact that there now was a connection, to upload results that were finished and download new work. If you login to your account page on the website and "view or edit general preferences" you can change settings that will make your life easier. If you go online at least once per day, set your "connect to network" preference to 1.0 days. At the moment it would be 0.1 days unless you have previously changed it. Don't go beserk with that setting. Don't go more than 1.5 days until you get a feeling for how it's going.

I've never been on dialup so I don't know how you get BOINC to create the connection automatically. There's bound to be a way - no doubt connected to those other preference settings you can see.

You're welcome. I didn't read the book first but I just loved the TV series when it first came out.

Thanks again Gary, it was

Thanks again Gary, it was great to find a forum in which a newcomer doesn't get flamed for asking a simple question that was probably somewhere in the help file right under my nose. This BOINC software is so automated a caveman could use it. Ups, better be careful.

With regard to Adams, if you liked the movie, you'll love the first book in the series, "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy". Easily the funniest and most enjoyable book in the series.

Later,
Gary

According to the web-site, you do have a work unit "In Progress" - downloaded a couple of hours ago. If you open up BOINC Manager, you should see it listed under the "Work" tab along with some statistics like "CPU time, time "To completion", etc. If it is not there, please report back.

You should also be able to see it here, by clicking on your name next to your post, then on "View" Computers, on your Computer ID, and finally on "Results".

Hi Marianne,

Welcome to Einstein at Home!! We hope you enjoy your stay here.

Let's see now ... So far you have,

  • * Created a workable account at EAH,
    * Downloaded and successfully installed BOINC,
    * Successfully attached your computer to the EAH project (at least),
    * Successfully downloaded work for your computer,
    * Managed to get all networking components working correctly,
    * Avoided or solved any issues with proxies, antivirus or firewall software,
    * Avoided any "Client errors" in your results list,
    * Posted your first message on the boards,

all without having to come here and tell us how illiterate you are!! :).

We are going to sign you up for sessions on the Help Desk next week!! You should have it all down pat by then :).

Seriously, congratulations on a difficult job well done. Please wander around and check the place out and ask any questions you want. You should find the natives are very friendly and helpful.

PS: Go to your account page, click on "View computers" and follow the links to find your results list. You will see the result your computer is currently working on. You can see more in your BOINC Manager windows as Stick has suggested.

Cheers,
Gary.

Hi Gary and

Hi Gary and _________

Sorry, I forgot the other responders name. I really do appreciate the responses.

I see where to look for progress reports--good way to start!!

Now,,,,,

1. Do I remove my "old" SETI program from the computer now or wait until the 16th??

2. Does the Einstein graphic (screensaver) auto kick in when Einstein is running??? If yes, it isn't. What do I have to do to make that happen???

3. Will SETI screensaver kick in auto(after the 15th) when IT is running? If not, what do I have to do???

Don't you just love all the questions. Thanks again, Marianne

Marianne,

I think I've read the Seti Classic program can run with BOINC but they will be competing for the same CPU cycles - so it is probably a good idea to remove Seti Classic (may be after it finishes it's next work unit).

The Einstein screensaver and new Seti screensaver are controlled by BOINC. That is, you must tell Windows to use the BOINC screensaver and when BOINC is running Einstein, the Einstein screensaver will be displayed and when BOINC is running Seti, the Seti screensaver will be displayed.

However, you may run into a problem with the Einstein screensaver. There is a "graphics bug" that causes problems on some computers with the Einstein 4.79 program. (If you check the Message Boards for screensaver problem reports, you'll see a bunch of them.) Anyway, if the bug strikes you, just download and install the Beta application here.

Stick, A semi-related

Stick,

A semi-related Point of Interest - While on the BOINC boards, I noticed that someone had the same "graphics bug" errorcode (0cx0000005) come up on a non-Einstein project! Sorry, I can't recall which project (Rosetta, LHC maybe??) Just thought it was rather curious/noteworthy.
