I had an interesting sequence on my moderately overclocked Q6600 this afternoon. It runs at 3.006 GHz at requested 1.35V with a decent Heat Sink/Fan.
The first step was an instant spontaneous reboot. Four Einsteins were running, and I had a few browser and newsreader windows up and such, when the screen just went black and reboot began.
This has been happening on this system about once a month. I've resolved to start bumping up the requested CPU voltage each time, so today was the first minimum increment.
The interesting thing, to me, came later. Here are key points in the message log, starting right as BOINC started up after the machine rebooted.

At the same reported second, all the in-process BOINC tasks reported the same initialization error.
As both SETI and Einstein were involved, perhaps this was something in BOINC, not the science ap.
Perhaps it was a leftover badness from my crash.
I'm not begging for help, just reporting an anomaly, so that others can pile on if this is common. A quick forum search did not show me recent discussion of this symptom.

Try rebooting the machine. Probably the system ran out of "desktop heap" (for technical details see e.g. http://blogs.msdn.com/ntdebugging/archive/2007/01/04/desktop-heap-overview.aspx).
