Amazon is back-ordered, but for a nearly 20% price drop (I've never seen it below $400), may be worth the extra wait. Big drops like this sometimes turn out to be one-day discounts, but you can cancel up to the day it ships if this turns out to be the first wave of a wider drop.

I'm going to assume this doesn't violate the "no commercial advertisement" rule; I'm not affiliated with Amazon, just thought the best current video card being offered at a tremendous discount would be of general interest to GPU crunchers. I've been preparing to build a new system, so had a few items in a wish list and saw the drop.

Alternate shows them at between €369 for the Club 3D Radeon HD 7970 royalQueen and €484 for the Sapphire HD 7970 VAPOR-X OC.
Mycom says €402,98 for the MSI Radeon HD7970 OC,3GB up to €430,98 for the Asus Radeon HD7970 DCII TOP,3GB.
CD-ROM-Land says €394,90 for the MSI Radeon HD7970 3GB and at max €458,90 for the MSI Radeon HD7970 Lightning (but then it does look dabomb ;-))

These are great double precision cards. I use one step down, the HD7950. I have 3 HD7950s crunching on Einstein (single) and Milkyway (double precision). The performance of the 79xx in double precision is 1/4 the single precision performance. On 77xx series it is 1/16 the single precision, a big drop. On many of the GTX 6xx series Nvidia cards it is 1/24 the single precision, an even bigger drop. Nvidia wants you to buy Tesla cards for double precision work.
On Einstein, which uses single precision, there isn't much difference between the high end AMD and Nvidia cards. On Milkyway, which uses double precision, AMD is the only way to go ($300 to $400 AMD cards equal or surpass multi $1000 Tesla cards).
On other projects the Nvidia CUDA apps are more mature than the AMD apps. I would study the posts under Number Crunching on the Message Boards for the particular project you are interested and pick the best suited card for the projects you are interested in.
When I purchased my HD 7950s they were $362 at Microcenter. Below $400 for a HD7970 is a great price.

Anyway, looks like it was a 24-hour thing. Price has just jumped $100, back to historic levels. I hope someone other than me (I bought two) was able to get the discount.

Actually all of the 6xx cards are only 1/24. nVidia had trouble with the GK100 chip intended to be their top of the line of their current generation, and probably offered as 1/8 GeForces and been used to create a new generation of Tesla cards. As it is the best GPU they've got at the moment is the GK104, which has minimal FP64 hardware available.
