I have customized the installer to start boinc as a service. I have finally been able to do this and am using the syntax: c:\winnt\system32\msiexec /i boinc.msi /qn /l c:\bonicsetup.log SETUPTYPE="Service" ALLUSERS=0 ENABLESCREENSAVER=0 ENABLELAUNCHATLOGON=0 LAUNCHPROGRAM=0 SERVICE_DOMAINUSERNAME="%DOMAIN/%USER" SERVICE_PASSWORD="$userpassword" SERVICE_GRANTEXECUTIONRIGHT=1

This starts boinc as a service at boot time. But, how do I automatically get connected to a project that I have setup? I would like to do this on multiple machines.

Also, will this produce the screensaver of the world, or will it just give me statistics (when running boinc as a service)?

Thank you.

Customizing the installer - boinc

Far as I know you could start Boinc as a service all ready, it gives you the option when installing. No graphics running as a service....

Service per Wiki

I would create a batch file to start the install.

The first step would be to create the directory (md "c:\program files\boinc").
The second step is to copy the account_*.xml files from some source.

Now do the install.

A couple of suggestions to make your experience a happy one.

1. Start a new thread for your specific problem, even if you think your problem may be somewhat "close" to the discussion in the existing thread (and in this case it is not!!) What you have done is thread hijacking and is frowned upon and I'm doing the wrong thing by replying so I'll ask you to start a new thread if you wish to continue.

2. Take a hammer to your caps-lock key - it's obviously stuck and needs fixing :).

3. You have four computers listed and your old version of BOINC was 4.19. You seem to now have the new 4.45 on one of them and it has crunched an E@H work unit but not one of the older work units that are listed. Depending on how you achieved this install you may very well have clobbered your other projects.

4. The correct procedure for what you are trying to do is this (per machine):-
(a) Completely exit from the old BOINC
(b) Use windows Add/Remove programs to uninstall it (do NOT manually delete anything else).
(c) Install the new BOINC using exactly the same folder (which will still be there) as the old BOINC was installed in.
(d) Start the new BOINC and it will find all your projects and all your work units and all will be happy and good.

It will continue on from where the old one left off although it will probably spank your backside for previous BOINC abuse that you have committed (look at all that work that has exceeded deadlines). There will be lots of new messages telling you that you are overcommitted etc, but JM7's magic new scheduler code will retrieve as much as possible and the new BOINC will have an option where you can abort hopelessly lost work. If you want the new scheduler to stabilise quickly and if you have several projects attached, reduce your "connect to network" interval to about 0.1 days, at least until things get on an even keel. Then resist the urge to fiddle with it unless you know exactly what you are doing.

If you have further questions or if you'd like to actually document what you did that caused you to lose projects, please start a new thread and leave this one alone for its rightful owners.

Cheers,
Gary.
