Hi there,
I am very new to this and am still trying to understand what I am doing. I am wondering why it appears that my computing stops when my computer goes to sleep. I don't shut the lid of my laptop, yet when I return there is no progress made on the tasks and the computer is completely cold.
Does the computer take occasional breaks?

You'll have to check the power settings of your computer; where exactly depends on your operating system. Most will put your computer to sleep by default after an hour or so without any user activity, but you can set it to stay on all the time if you want.
