Topic 192982

I recently changed my pc and redownloaded the BOINC software. The WU's are now being processed much faster but in the last 5 results I've returned, 3 show a 'client error'.

Can anyone shed any light on why this may be happening? It never did on my old machine.

Many thanks

'Client error' messages

Hmmm...

Looking around, the error code seems to be related to graphics problems. Since I see your running Vista, you might want to see if there's an updated driver for your card.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I can check with the man that set up my new pc but I'd be very surprised if he hadn't installed the latest driver. When you say it's graphics problems, can you be more specific so I can report back to him. In the meantime, I will check for an update just in case.

BOINC graphics on Vista won't

BOINC graphics on Vista won't be fully supported until the 6.x.y line comes out. As the developers and testers are still trying to get 5.10 out as stable, it's going to be a while.

Try turning off the screen saver and graphics for a couple of work units and see if the client errors clear up.

Also, even if your machine is

Also, even if your machine is even just a week old, there are major differences with the way access to hardware is done in Vista compared to everything which ever came before in Windows. This had led to a lot of scrambling on the part of manufacturers in getting their products to even play in Vista, let alone run as stable as they did previously, especially ones which have to interface with or use the 'protected' data paths. As far as the specific problem goes, that's hard to say for sure, but suffice to say that the guy who put your machine together for you most likely equipped it with the best available at the time and installed it correctly. Otherwise you would have seen showstoppers long before you got around to installing BOINC. ;-)

Therefore expect frequent updates to sound and graphics drivers for the near future at least. I would almost bet money he'll tell you the same.

Many of the problems with BOINC and Vista that Kathryn alluded to are related to this as well as the general tightening up of user access to certain areas of Windows in Vista.

Hi, Thanks to everyone

Hi,

Thanks to everyone that responded to my post. I did check my driver and it was the latest version, as I suspected it probably would be!

I had a look around this new PC and found an option to run programmes in previous versions of Windows. Since BOINC ran perfectly in WinXP, I thought it was worth giving that a try. Since then, all the WU's have uploaded with no error messages.

It probably has nothing whatsoever to do with what I did but please don't burst my bubble. I prefer to think it was a flash of genius...and a credit to us blondes ;-)

Best regards

LOL... When it comes to

LOL...

When it comes to troubleshooting, there's no points given for style, just for what works! ;-)

Generally speaking simpler is better. :-)
