Installed IE8 on Win/XP and now when I try to connect directly from Boinc manager 5.10.13 to a project forum nothing happens. IE8 window opens and says "connecting..." but nothing happens. Is there a setting somewhere that needs to be turned on? My wife also claims that while using her work email account from home she is having trouble with it locking up. She says it didn't happen with IE7; who knows. Maybe installing IE8 was a big mistake.

Can't launch IE8 from Boinc 5.10.13

Perhaps you only need to set up your default browser in Windows?

Internet Explorer is the only browser on my system and is the default. As I said in the OP, a IE8 window is launched from Boinc but no connection is made to a website.

Yet one more reason I finally made the switch from IE 8 to Firefox. Same true for switching to Thunderbird from Outlook. I took the plunge this past weekend, and it is one of the best computer decisions I've ever made. It's not even close which is better.
Dump Microslopt IE 8 and Outlook at all cost. Someday you'll thank me. :-)

RE: Installed IE8 on Win/XP

Confirmed.
I have a system running BOINC v5.10.13 as a service under Vista (32-bit), and various test versions of the BOINC manager set up to view and control that single running v5.10.13 client.
The native v5.10.13 Manager behaves just as you describe: clicking a web button opens IE8, with the address bar blank and 'Connecting...' showing on the first tab - and there it stops. No progress.
On the same system, the v6.4.5 manager and an early v6.6.xx manager (I think I tried .11) both opened IE8 and displayed the requested page properly.
Setting up a v6 Manager to work with a v5 installation is slightly tricky (and probably only recommended for service installs), but I bet it's easier than removing IE8 and going back to IE7!
If there's any demand, I can repeat the test with other popular managers (v6.2.19, v6.6.20, v6.6.28) and write up how I did it and what I found.

If IE8 is already open (say as a result of clicking the forum link button the first time), then clicking the button a second time seems to complete the process and show the desired page.
RE: If IE8 is already open

Arrrgghh!... Makes me want to scream...er... about the fact that a newer version like IE8 can't at least do the same things that IE7 could do, but do them better. MS pushed out IE8 in their monthly updates which I install without asking questions. This is one case where I should have retained IE7. Hind sight is 20/20 they say...probably with reason.

Mozilla FireFox just keeps getting better with it's releases. I think the array of choices with add-ons is awesome. Possible downside is some software, like Real Player that with some versions assumes IE or vomits in it's absence. But that too can be substituted.

Except the last couple are driving me nuts. If I get an unknown page on one page, the rest of the pages follow that and I have to back up where I was. I always have several pages open at once.
It also will not remember it's last position (multiple monitors), and keeps going to a small size and wrong monitor.

Looks like something broke. I will see if any other application has similar problem on one affect host.
And I have seen FF3.Underwhelming experience.(I actually had to use it when repairing one computer) To get it to usable state I suspect I'd need some plugins and experience is that as soon as any plugin is active stability of application is going to hell.(Adobe and Sun are often guilty of that)
So my suggestion is to try other apps to lunch IE8 to locate possible fault.
