Topic 193158

Sometime yesterday my BOINC client started trying to contact the server to report work and download. Its been failing to contact the server all day for 2 days now, retrying every minute. Can someone tell me how to find out what IP address its trying to reach so I can see if it got blocked on my end by some overzealous IT guy?

Hi!

The rule of thumb is that if you can reach this forum from a given PC, BOINC on the same PC should also be able to contact the server.

Shutting down and restarting BOINC may help. Otehrwise, please post the error message that should be visible in the "M;essages" tab of BOINC manager in advanced view.

The servers are up and running without any noticable glitch recently, so the problem must be on your side. We'll know more when we have a look on the error message.

Restarting the BOINC service

Restarting the BOINC service didn't fix it either

OK, so BOINC can get no connection to the internet whatsoever, not just Einstein@Home.

Try "ping einstein.phys.uwm.edu" on the PC that BOINC is running on. What does it say?

Is Web-surfing working on the PC where BOINC is installed?

Do you connect to the internet via a proxy (from the PC where BOINC is running) or directly?

What kind of fire-wall products are used ? Is it possible a personal firewall blocks access?

Needless to say, check cables, network cards...

ping einstein.phys.uwm.edu

Message 73198 in response to message 73197

ping einstein.phys.uwm.edu works fine, I'm replying to your message on the computer in question. What port does BOINC use to connect? Is it 80?

I'm running on XP SP2 with just the Windows Firewall, but I added an exception for the BOINC application and its still can't connect. It was working fine up until yesterday and worked though several units before this blockage showed up. I haven't messed with the firewall at all since I setup this computer last week.

There is no proxy I am aware of.

Under Advanced->Options-Connections tab there are no connections listed. Is there supposed to be an item in this list if I just connect to the internet via LAN?

Sorry. I misread your post (before editing out my first response). But the answer to your question is "No". Make sure the boxes aren't checked either. With regard to your firewall, have you changed your BOINC configuration (e.g. updated BOINC) since you setup your computer last week? If so, you may need to reauthorize BOINC in your firewall configuration.

I actually turned off the firewall entirely, still no connection.
