After reinstalling an old copy of my system I am not
able to install the BOINC 5.4.9 that I downloaded
this morning. I get the following errors:
the feture you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable Click )K to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package BOINC.msi in the box below:
C\\WINNT\\Downlaoded Installaltions\\{E80F...
I search for BOINC.msi and then change to the correct directory
Next error:
The file C\\:WINNT\\Downloaded Installations\\{D...}BOINC.msi is not a valid installation package for the product BOINC. Try to find the installation package BOINC.msi in a folder
from which you can install BOINC
After giving OK I get the error
Error 1714 The older version of BOINC cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group
Before doing the last installation try I used the Windows search function to find all files with BOINC in them and deleting those directories. I also deleted a folder with BIONC in the registry.
The directory
C\\WINNT\\Downlaoded Installaltions\\{E80F...
does not exist on the computer, I deleted it before starting the installation. The file
C\\:WINNT\\Downloaded Installations\\{D...}BOINC.msi
was created during the installation attempt.
What shall I do?

Cannot reinstall Boinc after disk crash
)
Looks like you have file and access errors all around. Have you run some disk checking utility - to identify and mark bad areas? What was the nature of the disk crash?
Cheers, Mike.

My harddisk is divided into
)
My harddisk is divided into C: and D:. I tried to defrag D: with the windows
defrag utility. After it had hung for several hours I restarted the computer
and found the C: partition corrupt. The D: partition remained intact. I formated
C: and reinstalled Windows 2000. I also installed an old backup of C which I had on partition D:, made with the windows backup utillity. I did run CHKDSK at one stage, no errors reported.

RE: My harddisk is divided

As regards C: drive, you can reformat but that won't necessarily save you from a MBR ( master boot record ) error alas. CHKDSK will pick up on any errors within the drive as defined though.....
Perhaps something like Partition Magic may help here, as it will generally ferret out errors in the MBR and such-like. Some clever viruses can go for the MBR too...
The possibly even sadder news is that the hard-drive controller chip is starting to go south - in which case I'd try to promptly backup anything of value if I were you ( to somewhere else altogether, a CD say ) before it dies full stop.
Hope this helps...
Cheers, Mike.

Use the Windows Installer
)
Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, install and run it, look in the list for any corrupt looking installers. They have either no name, or a corrupted looking name. Delete that or those. Then try to reinstall BOINC.
