i did a re-install of windows vista. before i did i went to my program directory and copied the whole boinc folder to another drive. after i installed windows i copied the folder back to the program files directory. i created a shortcut to the boincmgr file, put it on my desktop and tried to start the program. i got this error message: "boinc manager is not able to connect to a boinc client". I am running version 5.4.11 of the program. Can anyone help? I would like to find a solution that does not involve re-installing the program as i have trouble getting my credit history and name of computer squared away the same as it was before.

thank you very much for any help.

boinc manager is not able to connect to a boinc client

The basic mistake you made was that you didn't uninstall BOINC before saving the BOINC folder.

Uninstalling and reinstalling BOINC does NOT in any way damage your project data or configuration information so it should be done with confidence whenever you need to do major surgery on your OS or even shift BOINC from one computer to another.

What you need to do now is copy your saved BOINC folder back to a location on your freshly reistalled OS and then do a fresh install of BOINC "over the top" of where it now resides once you have copied it back. The BOINC installer will offer you a choice of where you want to install BOINC. You must ensure that you use the exact location where you have copied back the BOINC folder. You can even take the opportunity to shift BOINC to a more desirable location if you wish, just as long as you tell the installer exactly where this new location is.

During the install, the installer will find all key information like your account details, the projects you are attached to and all work in progress that you might have. Your computer ID will not change and nor will your credit history for your machine.

The upshot is that BOINC needs to be properly installed and you shouldn't try to avoid that. Because you are using Vista you might consider putting BOINC somewhere "better" than the Program Files folder.

Cheers,
Gary.
