When i start BOINC all i get is this message at the screensaver but according to the manager its not suspended at all...
Where is the problem?
I have the same problem, and as far as I can tell, my computer has _not_ been doing any E@H work as a result. It is not doing benchmarks.
I can make it work by selecting "Run Always" instead of "Run based on Preferences", but obviously I don't want that.
I *think* it first started happening when I upgraded to BOINC 4.45 (from 4.19).
I *think* it only happens with my work desktop WinXP/Intel computer, which is often left, for the night, with SSH and Xwindow/Exceed clients open from (or is it to?) remote linux computers (which may be the problem. Hm. I'll do a controlled test tonight).
> Check your "do work while computer is in use" setting in your preferences.
Is that different from selecting "Run Always" instead of "Run based on Preferences"?
I can do that, and then E@H runs just fine, but my computer bogs down while I am in front of it, trying to get work done. So, I don't want to do that. I want E@H to start up when my keyboard and mouse are idle, ie, when the screensaver starts. But it's not doing that. I suspect it may be because of the open connections to external computers via F-secure SSH and Exceed, but I'm not sure...
Meanwhile, I have done as you suggested, and will see how it goes...
You may want to keep some time between the settings "work while your computer is in use: No + start crunching when the computer is idle for 3 minutes" and the amount of time set for the screensaver.
If the screensaver cuts in at the same time as when your idle time starts, Boinc can become confused and never start crunching the work units. Keep at minimum a minute between idle time and the screensaver.
Thanks for the advice. In my Preferences I have
Do work while computer is in use? no
Do work only after computer is idle for 3 minutes
and the screen saver is set to 5 minutes.
In the BOINC manager, I select "Run based on preferences".
I shut down all my ssh sessions and Xwindow sessions
(but Exceed is still running, as is Outlook and a web browser).
And still, when the screensaver kicks in, it says
"BOINC is currently suspended" and the BOINC Manager
messages indicate that no work is being performed.
The only way I can get E@H to do work is by selecting
"Run always" in the BOINC manager.
And now I just closed every app that does network access (except for the things WinXP does on its own) and restarted.

Hey, Alan. Sorry you are having trouble!
In the BOINC manager, is there an entry under the Commands menu, which has 'Network Preferences' and then the choices 'Always available', 'Based on preferences' and 'Suspended'?. I have seen this flip to 'Suspended' for reasons that I don't understand.
Interesting. I am running BOINC Manager 4.45.
There is no "Commands" menu, and I can't fine "Network PReferences" anywhere.
There's a "Disable BOINC Network Access" in the File menu, but it's not checked. I don't seem to have any trouble with the network connection; I've "Update"d E@H several times and the messages in the "Messages" tab seem sensible.
Now I'm gonna try downloading a fresh copy of BOINC 4.45 and re-install it. Wish me luck!

Alan, my bad. I've been working with the development versions (eg, Manager 5.1.X) for some weeks now and it has options that 4.45 lacks. Sorry for the red herring. Which one of your four hosts is it that's showing this problem? Grep for 'hostid' in client_state.xml in the BOINC working directory.

Could you post the log?
Is it doing benchmarks? This will suspend computation for a bit.
