I have 2 boxes running a 2.6 kernel and 4 running 2.4 kernels. The two boxes running 2.6 have to be watched carefully because I will discover that E@H is not running. Looking at the transcript I see that the last thing that happened was a benchmark.
After the benchmark - nothing.
I kill BOINC with a control-C and restart and it gets back to work. The boxes running 2.4 don't have this problem as far as I have observed.
FWIW, the kernel flags I use to boot are -noapic -nolapic -noacpi
Cheers.

Which version of BOINC? I know that for Windows this was an issue, and it was fixed (for windows at least) with 4.45 (I believe).

I am using boinc_4.19_i686-pc-linux-gnu on all machines, I observe this problem only on two machines with Linux 2.6 kernels.
I check each of these machines using "top" and when E@H is not at the top I shut down BOINC and re-start it.

I also had the same symptoms. Running BOINC 4.19, Wine, Linux 2.6.11 and later. The problem showed up about once a week.
It's reaching the death trap within 24 hours - let's see ...
