When I try to download tasks I get this error message :

I've looked at the log URL but it's all gobbledegook to me!
I'm running an M1 Mac with Big Sur 11.1. If the tasks from Arecibo wont run on my Mac, what about tasks from other observatories?
I've also looked through FAQs and the Problems forum but couldn't find anyone else having this issue.

There aren't any M1 gpu applications here yet. You will have to wait for new applications for that new hardware.
Supposedly the Einstein developers have a M1 for development now. So you might see a new application for it sometime in the future.
Supposedly, Rosetta project apps will run on it with the Apple Rosetta 2 emulation layer.

Reading this post at github, it seems that you might be able to run the FGRP5 cpu app through the Rosetta 2 emulation layer.
But I can confirm that an App using SSE (Einstein@Home FGRP) runs reliably on an M1 Mac with Rosetta.

Thanks Keith. I do have Rosetta installed and all my older Intel-based apps run o.k. FWIW I'm also running Rosetta@home on BOINC 7.16.14 (should've mentioned that earlier) and it's chugging away no probs. That was originally running on my 2011 Macbook
Anyway, I can wait until the developers here come up with a fix.

Have you checked CPU preferences and Gamma Ray Pulsar #5 preferences in Project preferences to get the FGRP5 application?
It seems that runs OK here on the M1.

Do I do that from my Account page -> Preferences -> Project? If so, all the "Use CPU/GPU" options are set to YES and all the "Run only the selected applications" are ticked.
Don't know if it's relevant but Einstein@home doesn't appear on my account page - only Rosetta@home and SETI@home.

Just tried unchecking a few of the Applications to bypass the Arecibo app but they all respond with "No work available" - the GRP apps and Grav. Wave apps.

THIS is the problem " "Run only the selected applications" are ticked" untick that box and no matter what you have checked it will try all the other kinds of tasks to find one that works for you. For MOST people that's a bad idea but for you and your M1 it's an easy way to let Einstein decide what tasks to send you.

I would unselect all applications EXCEPT the FGRP5 application and see what the log shows after a work request.
It will still probably say:
But at least it will try and get and run the FGRP5 tasks under Rosetta.

Well I see a new host that attempted FGRP5 work but they all errored out with time limit exceeded.
That was mentioned in the github post that running tasks through Rosetta takes much longer than running them natively on x86 hardware.
But at least you are getting work with the only app available that can work.
Now you are in a timeout from exceeding your daily work limit. But the time was very short, shorter than normal for the FGRP5 cpu tasks.
Looks like the client and scheduler set a way too low estimated duration for the tasks.
Also you are requesting 1 days worth of work. That is way too much. Decrease that to 0.2 days worth of work to start. Then if you can complete a single valid task, then increase your cache to a bit more.

Thanks again guys. I downloaded some work onto my older Macbook to see how that would fare - the tasks downloaded ok so now I'm trying to fine tune the computing preferences to strike the right balance. I'll also change the workload prefs to .2 as you suggest, Keith.

You can put your old Mac in a different venue than the M1 mac that way you can optimize the tasks each gets that are best for it. There are 4 venues at most projects.. default, home, work and school. A few projects have over a dozen choices but since we aren't there we will leave that for another day or topic.
For instance I use gpu's here to crunch as well as cpu's and I also use a RaspberryPi, that means I need settings for each kind of device I have, the venues let me do that easily.
