I am plaqued by a few work units that I haven't even started that are past the due date. But it seems I have to work through them any how before getting on to the more recent work, which will probably make those work units late as well. Is there any way of deleting old work units without totally detaching from the project ?

Yes, with the actual stable client 4.25 you can stop a single, certain WU. I've done that already (with some unstable PPAH WUs), and it works fine.

depends on the client you are using. with 4.25 you can stop computation of WUs individually - as Saenger already said (Hi!).
with 4.19 there is no way I know of - beside restting project.
You should finish those WUs first which will be in time and update the project to get the credit for them.
you'll find some hints also in these other threads:

You might also want to merge your hosts, or do you have 13 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz? That would make me really envious. =)
Go to your account and the view your computers. Choose on of the P4's and then near the bottom you can choose to merge.
Another tip is to reduce the connect to network value if you haven't allready. This will lower the risk of missing the deadline in the future.
Yes I do actually have that

Yes I do actually have that many machines just running BOINC on a shelf. They are hot spares in case something radically goes wrong with my computer labs but so far nothing like that happened.
I did that adjusting of the network value as well and have upgraded to 4.25 so I can stop wasting time on WU's that have expired. Too bad the overall system just doesn't purge them for you as the scheduler knows that the WU is past due.

In my case, it should be only an option, as I crunch Lattice-Alpha, and the WUs all expire bfore being crunched complete, but that's no problem, as nobody cares atm. With this nice feature as a must, I would be lost there ;)

Now 98 P4s ??? How did you get UNBC to agree to that??? It went nowhere at my work...

If you had BOINC setup

If you had BOINC setup properly you would not have any pass due WUs....
