Do we have any

Do we have any claims/reports/faq from XFX about the switchable Bios that supports any claims that "quiet" is more productive for mining than "performance"?

I have an XFX Rx 5700 that has been running 950,000~ to 984,000~ in "quiet" mode.

When I switched it to "performance" mode and fired up the "automatic" overclock it promptly started OCing at a higher speed than "quiet" did. It is also drawing more power. I am wondering how much testing has been done on the "Mining mode" vs. "Performance" mode?

Anyway, I am hopeful that it really does crunch faster in performance mode.  Mining mode is maybe "the fastest crunching we can do cheaper" so we can hit "breakeven" quicker and start making a buck rather than the fastest crunching.

Don't get me wrong.  I am sensitive to the amount of electricity I have to pay for.  But since I don't have a profit motive I go for the maximum crunching I can try to get out of a card.

That system has now broken its "personal best" RAC for a single Rx 5700.  Since I don't have records of task numbers but only RAC I cannot be sure that this is strictly an improvement in my system's production given the "new tasks running faster" conversation in another thread.

It still looks like I am probably not going to crack the 1,000,000 RAC barrier for a single Rx 5700 gpu.  Calculations claim I "should" but the graph arc is showing a slow down in the upward trend (again).

likely has a lot to do with the fact that the new GR tasks run in about 2/3rd the normal runtime. which means your (and everyone else's) RAC will increase by about 50%

Well "it" did crack the 1,000,000 RAC barrier.

This leads me to wonder what would happen if I switched back to "quiet" mode :)

The experiment with the 4 Rx 5700's on the AMD 2700x looks like it has answered the basic question.  It doesn't look like 4 Rx 5700's are sufficient to break through to a "much: higher ranking. And 3 will still leave that machine way up there.

I suppose it would be nice to see how high a RAC I can get but now that the tasks have changed those numbers would be conflated.  The only thing I can count on is relative ranking to help me see if I am really making any progress.

It looks likely my single RX 5700 experiment will end up with a "stock" Rx 5700 moved back to Amd 3950x machine.

Between the Stimulus check

Between the Stimulus check and one of my amended tax return refunds, I can now afford some used Rx 5700's (not XT).

But at what (inflated) price point?  I bought the bulk of my Rx 5700's long enough ago that I paid right at or below $325 for each one.  The XFX one was a little more.

There are actually a few "buy it now" Rx 5700's on eBay for less than $1,000.

I would not buy any GPUs at these inflated prices right now. just a bad decision. Only buy if you can get something at a normal price. $1000 for an RX5700 is insanity.

I've bought a few GPUs since prices started going up, but only because I was able to buy at MSRP.

I looked for an MSRP for an Rx 5700.  Seems to be $379.

After pondering a bit more I decided my maximum was $500.  I have set up an eBay product price filter for that.  And for my amusement have bid $500 on several cards.

It's a hobby.  That means I can do things for personal amusement like making (probably) non-winning bids on Rx 5700's.  :)

I just installed an Rx 5600

I just installed an Rx 5600 xt on my 3950x box to confirm it works.  And the first thing I had to do was enable the "Above 4G" because without it, Device Manager was reporting the card said it didn't have enough resources.

This is the exact same system that booted with an Rx 580 and an Rx 5700.  Now an Rx 580 and an Rx 5600 xt.

Hmmmm.....

If the Rx 5600 xt will co-exist running two threads with the Rx 5700's running two threads I may be on my way to a 7 gpu box.

So far the performance of the

So far the performance of the two rx 5600 xt's I just got is falling in line with gpu-z database. It said something like 14 percent slower than an rx5700.

Between the increased

Between the increased reliability of a Ryzen 3700x/x570 MB (Asrock Taichi), two generic blower-type Rx 5700's, and version 1.28 of the Gamma Ray #1 app I am floating along at about 1.8 Million RAC.

And I couldn't be happier :)
