Every Task in All Projects has seemed to have FROZEN. Everything is at a Stand Still, and nothing is Processing. Any Suggestions. ... I have attempted on numerous occasions to SUSPEND or RESTART appropriately, but Nothing Happens. Also I have Blank White Screens when I Open most tabs. The Projects Tab and Tasks tab DO Open, but it takes excessive time to do so.

Hello, I reinstalled BOINC

Hello,

I reinstalled BOINC on a new laptop a few days ago. Since then I have not been ab le to obtain any work for the project. The tasks all say "Downloading" and stays at 0%; under 'Transfers' the status seems to alternate between 'Retry in...' (often a number of hours), or 'Download: pending (project backoff...), also with a timer running into hours.

I'm running Windows 7 and the Comodo firewall. I have not received any firewall messages indicating that its blocking anything. BOINC is set to run even when I'm working on the PC.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Pieter Watson

But you didn't receive any messages either that asked to go through?

You have your computers hidden, so any communications log available can only be seen by you. So please post an excerpt of your event log messages around an asking for work time, plus give the link to your computer's communications log, please.

Which is exactly what Jord asked you for, thanks :-).

If you take a look through the messages there, you can see that every time BOINC tries to download some of the many needed files, something at your end is preventing the downloaded data from being written to disk - eg

All you need to do is properly configure/disable/correct whatever is preventing the downloaded data from being written to disk. I guess it could be that the BOINC client doesn't have permission to write to the folder it is attempting to write to or that some firewall/anti-malware component hasn't been configured to allow the data to be stored on disk. If you can't solve this, please post details about your system, the OS, and whatever firewall/anti-malware components you may have installed and someone should be able to help.

Cheers,
Gary.

I asked for the contact log (utter right) at http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/hosts_user.php, but the event log is nice as well. ;-)

He already said, Windows 7 and Comodo.

In this case Pieter needs to add a new definition to his firewall that allows BOINC to download project applications.

And there's a sticky thread in this forum with instructions for doing that: pb with comodo firewall (I think that means "Problem with..." - mods?)

Pieter, besides the firewall

Pieter, besides the firewall issue, you have another source of troubles:
In the event log you can see a line that says:
see scheduler log messages on http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu//host_sched_logs/6130/6130588

In that link you will see the following:

Quote:
2012-11-28 22:32:32.3683 [PID=28038] [version] parsed project prefs setting 'gpu_util_brp': 1.000000
2012-11-28 22:32:32.3683 [PID=28038] [version] driver version required max: -29053, supplied: 29667
2012-11-28 22:32:32.3683 [PID=28038] [version] Checking plan class 'BRP4cuda32nv301'
2012-11-28 22:32:32.3683 [PID=28038] [version] parsed project prefs setting 'gpu_util_brp': 1.000000
2012-11-28 22:32:32.3683 [PID=28038] [version] driver version required min: -30100, supplied: 29667

As you can see, the video divers you are using are not accepted by Einstein (they have a bug that turn off the GPU crunching capabilities when the OS puts the monitor to sleep, which causes a lot of errors).
So, if you want to crunch for Einstein on your GPU you will need to upgrade (or downgrade) your drivers for any version older than 290.53 or newer than 301.00...
(of course if you dont fix the firewall/conection issue, no matter what driver you have you wont be able to do anything)

All, Thank you for

All,

Thank you for spending your time on this. The simple solution turns out to be to install BOINC in the ProgramData directory.

Those with a say at BOINC may want to try to persuade them to change the installation defaults, as most users, who may want to participate in the BOINC projects, certainly don't want to fiddle with Windows privileges, firewalls and BOINC settings.

I messed around with the Comodo firewall to no avail. So far as its concerned, BOINC could do whatever it wanted. It was stupid Windows: the revised privileges structure built into Windows 7, I'd assume. (I don't know much about this stuff, and I don't intend to know much about it either--the firewall thread just made my head ache).

Horacio,

Thanks for pointing out the GPU driver issue. I'll see if I can find a replacment. Windows, and HP, insists its up to date.

Pieter
