Topic 192377

I want to add some more computers to my accout. I already added one, but it isn't getting any work done. Could it be since the new computer is in the same house and running on the same internet that it doesn't get any work done?

Adding Computers

You definitely can have multiple computers running under the same account. When you attach to the project just use the same email and password.

If you could copy and paste the log (under the messages tab in BOINC) from the computer that isn't getting work, we could take a look and see where things might be going wrong.

Just to note, I see two

Just to note, I see two computers on your account, so they did attach. One is a P4 3G.06, and one is a P4 1.5G. So it looks like you got things going for a start. The 1.5G looks like it downloaded a single unit on the 31st, and has not talked back to the servers here, since. The 3.06G is doing work regularly.

Make sure you didn't accidentally suspend the 1.5G machine.

I looked at the messages on

Message 60316 in response to message 60315

I looked at the messages on the 1.5G and it said that the computer was too overcommitted to carry out the task. What is this problem? I aborted the task and got a new one, but it says the same thing too.

That sounds like a rather loose paraphrase of the message you actually got. “Overcommitted usually just means that BOINC has tasks that it thinks may not be finished before their deadlines. This estimation is based on the host’s past history, and for a new client without a ‘track record’ its initial guess what the system can do may not be very accurate. Moreover BOINC is generally inclined to err on the conservative or pessimistic side, to avoid downloading more work than can be handled. Let it crunch a few WUs before jumping to any conclusions—note that you can compare the CPU times & deadlines yourself to gauge the system’s performance until BOINC is ‘trained’.

(AFAICT all the S5RI WUs we’re getting these days are about the same size: in case there were indeed a problem with the system’s performance, aborting tasks would not even address it, let alone being any kind of solution.)
