Incredible! During the last few days, daily workunit production was more than 0.5% of the total number of WUs for the S5R3 run. And this does not yet include idle time from ATLAS.
Maybe a bunch of folks who crunch for Riesel and Milky Way have cruised in for some backup work with the problems they've been having with their backends.
I know a couple of my slugs ran home to EAH to pick up some extra work over the last 24 hours.
One thing I have noticed is that more people are finishing quicker. I was holding about 14-15K pending, this has been under 10K for several days. It's nice to see more people helping out.
One contributing factor to the new host registration upsurge is the conversion of Windows machines to Linux resulting in a new hostID.
To take advantage of the ~15% boost in performance of the Linux app, I've been converting quite a significant number of my machines lately, as well as adding some new ones. It's been making a significant increase in my RAC :-).
I use PCLinuxOS and they released a lightweight version called MiniMe 2008 earlier this year. I setup one machine with this and configured it all to my taste and then installed (but didn't start running) all the BOINC stuff that was needed including all the latest skygrid files (to save downloading any particular file when first launching) and the 4.49 science app files. Once I had everything in place ready to launch, I used the remaster facility to make a new live CD with everything on my HDD (/ and /home).
The original MiniMe CD was about 340 MB (from memory) and this had grown by about another 50MB after I had used synaptic to update all installed packages to the very latest and to add a couple of other things I wanted. Then when I added all the BOINC stuff I ended up with about 430MB for the remastered live CD. I've now tested all this with at least a dozen linux installations over the weekend and it all works brilliantly. I can take a running windows machine and within 20-25 minutes it will be a dual booting machine with the Windows partition truncated just enough to make room for linux and with the new host already downloading data files for crunching its first task with the new linux hostID. I've essentially eliminated the slow steps of tweaking all configuration by having that all done on the remastered live CD.
I've done this enough times to be confident that shrinking a windows partition to make space for linux seems to be relatively painless and problem free. Hopefully this positive experience will continue. Some time ago I had started to prepare for this sort of thing by deliberately leaving some unallocated space on a Windows only install. Using that space to add linux is quite trivial but it's also good to know that the install procedure can carve out the needed space when it hasn't been left there in advance. You can get a viable linux install for crunching purposes in less than 4.0GB if you need to. I've got machines with 8GB HDDs that are now dual booting crunching boxes with enough spare space if I want to add other projects.

Gary you are brilliant. I was just thinking this morning ( it happens ) that the ups 'n downs of the machine registrations is not being followed by the TFlops curve. What you say now makes perfect sense, as I was positing a new species of higher performance machines being swapped in and replacing lower end devices as a persistent trend. I was trying to think of why is there alot of hardware upgrading going on .... end of financial year tax write-down, that sort of thing? Or existing higher end machines previously never used for E@H coming in? But here you can keep the hardware the same but drop in a better OS & app combo, with ~15% being a decent carrot .... :-)

As I too have discovered recently that Linux installs are minimally challenging, compared with my last effort at it ~ five years ago. Jeez, you can now do it off a USB stick on the right m/boards!
