I don't have exact seconds to mention, but in a recent install of Kubuntu I found that Einstein does a WU around 55 minutes faster than in WinXP - using BOINC 5.2.13 Kubuntu 5.10 with updates.

Sorry to hear that all the "micromanaging", clean-installing Windows on a weekly basis, wound up biting you on the hindside. I had no idea (as I suppose you did either) that M$ had limitations on re-installs. :-{
The Mac and Linux apps are quite a bit newer than the Windows, and more-optimized, I would imagine.

yep dear old billy and his tricks - next year I'll get a new cd for windows so I can do games, but Kubuntu is pretty good: not perfect, but not bad at all for a free distro

I have been using Slackware, Unifix, Corel and now SuSE Linux. SuSE allows you to maintain a Windows partition and has a very efficient on line database.

Yup it's easy to install, tho 5.10 of kubuntu had one or two issues which were solved by doing the update thing, also over here, the ISPs don't authenticate connections, to had to set noauth in /etc/ppp/options to get the dialup going. But for the rest I was happy - sound works out of the box, as does screen, usb mouse, hp printer etc - only hardware that doesn't work is my LG scanner (I know it isn't supported in Linux), which I want to sell anyway. OpenOffice 2 is installed, and basic stuff like e-mail and the browser has improved over the years.

SUSE is a damn fine OS, with one issue: it is a bit slow compared to WIndows XP. I grant you that I have tweaked XP into the ground and know it well, where SUSE didn't stay for long once I knew the speed factor - I used to reformat XP to speed up BOINC after all. If I had an adsl connection I would go for Gentoo which is pretty slippy, but on this baby dialup.....

Since I am running Linux amd BOINC on a 400 MHz Pentium II speed is not an issue for me. But I like to watch webcasts using RealPlayer or Mplayer, this last compiled by me and also its Moxilla/Firefox plugin. Cheers.

I had an AMD 2 years back - managed to fry that cpu - normal usage (not Einstein@home - grin) so changed to Intel 2.6 that I have now (course, now I fry motherboards instead...) - not great power really compared to some of the bright lads and lasses living in the lands of powerful PCs, but down here in the south of africa it's not bad :)
