Emergency crews are still responding to a fiery train crash in Texas that occurred this morning, resulting in the derailment of multiple freight cars and billows of black smoke.
According to Joe Faust, a spokesman for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, two of its mixed-freight trains were involved in the accident at 8:40 a.m. in Panhandle, Texas. Images from the scene showed box cars on fire and piled atop each other.
Faust said four employees were involved in the crash.
Carson County Sheriff Loren Brand said that there were an unknown number of injuries and that one person had been taken to a hospital. Brand said crews still did not know what the freight cars were carrying.
According to ABC affliate KVII, the city of Panhandle had asked residents to reduce their water usage so that firefighters could effectively fight the blaze.
Evacuations had been ordered for the east side of Panhandle because the winds had shifted, blowing smoke toward homes and putting residents at risk.
PANHANDLE, Texas, June 30 (UPI) -- Two railroad workers were found dead and a third remains missing after a fiery head-on train collision outside Amarillo, Texas.
Yes, very sad.
I haven't heard whether the survivor has said anything, or whether they've found the event recorders.

@all - Is it me or has there been a overly large number of industrial train crashes in America over the last 12-18 months? Or are they just being reported more often than before?
I think that like many other things, they're being reported more, and more luridly, partially due to social media and partially for ratings and therefore profits.

I queried once why the USA has these long trains with oil and chemicals all over the place, and was told its cheaper to transport the stuff thousands of miles by rail than build new plants next to the factories, or vice versa.
You wouldn't think it would cost in, unless the railways are selling themselves short to get contracts at cost price, and compromising safety in the process. Or the goods are so cheap to produce they can afford the rail fares.
Any replies by PM please, no hairy discussions allowed!
Keeping it as hairless as possible, one of the trains involved was LACLPC. LAC is one of BNSF's several yards in the Los Angeles area; LPC is Logistics Park Chicago, which is actually 45+ miles out from downtown Chicago on the far south side of Joliet, on part of the old Joliet Arsenal property. LPC handles mostly international containers, sorting them out for their destinations. This could mean putting them on road chassis for destinations within a few hundred miles or for eastern railroads' yards in the Chicago area, or they could be forwarded to those same railroads by rail.
The other train was CHISBD, Chicago to San Bernardino, CA, which I think would be domestic containers for distribution in the greater southern California area.

The life of those born before the 40's(and in the 40's)
Quote:
We were born before TV, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Zerox, contact lenses, videos and the pill. We were before radar, credit cards, split atoms, laser beams and ballpoint pens, before dishwashers, tumble driers, electric blankets, air conditioners, drip-dry clothes, and before man walked on the moon.
We got married first and then lived together (how quaint can you be?). We thought “fast food†was what you ate in Lent, a “Big Mac†was an oversized raincoat and “crumpet†we had for tea. We existed before house husbands, computer dating and “sheltered accommodation†was where you waited for a bus.
We were before day care centres, group homes and disposable nappies. We never heard of FM radio, tape decks, artificial hearts, word processors, or young men wearing earrings. For us “time sharing†meant togetherness, a “chip†was a piece of wood or fried potato, “hardware†meant nuts and bolts, and “software†wasn’t a word.
Before 1940, “Made in Japan†meant junk, the term “making out†referred to how you did in your exams, “stud†was something that fastened a collar to a shirt and “going all the way†meant staying on a double decker bus to the terminus. In our day, cigarette smoking was fashionable, “grass†was mown, “coke†was kept n the coalhouse, a “joint†was a piece of mean you ate on Sundays and “pot†was something you cooked it in. “Rock music†was a fond mother’s lullaby, a “gay person†was the life and soul of the party, while “aids†just meant beauty treatment or help for someone in trouble.
We who were born before 1940 must be a hardy bunch when you think of the way in which the world has changed and the adjustments we have had to make. No wonder there is a generation gap today — but — by the Grace of God, we have survived!
Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

I predict that we will not be down at this time on the first Tuesday in July next year. (At least not intentionally.)
