RE: The places to look for

The places to look for these various application versions are:

* Applications page for the current stock applications (note 1)
* Power User Applications (2)
* Beta test applications (3)

(1) These are the applications that will get sent out automatically to the vast majority of users - present company excepted, of course. To describe the current app as v6.04 is a Windows-centric point of view (something I'm also frequently guilty of). Einstein usually uses the version number mechanism to distinguish between platforms.

(2) Power user apps are usually stable/tested/optimised, but only suitable for a limited class of CPUs. Just at the moment this is showing the v6.08 app, which I would have thought was better classed as a Beta test for W98/ME: it doesn't have any 'power' features for SSE or SSE2 processors.

(3) I hope everyone here knows what a Beta test is - may be good or may be terrible, use at your own risk, feedback requested. A new full-feature v6.09 package has appeared this morning. [and been announced while I was composing. Thanks, Bernd!]

[And if BM is watching - it seems slightly inconsistent that (1) and (3) are linked from the front page, but (2) isn't. RFC?)

Are theses optimized clients still good? I'm using v3.04 standard apps.

No. Those apps (over 4 months ago) were for S5R4, as the thread title states. Your v3.04 is for S5R5, which we've been running for the last three months.

Thanks for the reply. I take it that there's no need to run or there arent' any optimized clients for Windows this go around?

The applications are already

The applications are already optimized. A switcher program will detect what your CPU is capable of and then either use the normal app, the one with SSE or the one with SSE2.

Thanks Ageless.... I've just been plodding along here and suddenly realized that sometime back when I formatted my drives that I was now on the stock app. "Set it and Forget it" sounds like a good excuse for this poor aging memory.
