Here's a link for Debian http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/#stable, just download this CD, you should download 64bit version, not 32bit if you have more than 4Gb of RAM. I would also chose Debian because it's highly stable/secure (I also use it on my server)

64bit might be ok if your Xeons support EM64T, but 64bit has no advantage for E@H, and 64bit is still not as mature as 32bit. Thats why i use debian 32bit with PAE support (686-bigmem kernel) on one of my debian rigs. A 32bit bigmem kernel will let your server use all of its 10GB RAM and maintain maximum software and driver compatibility.

Unfortunately i dont think the Debian CDs has the option to install a bigmem kernel on initial install, which is why i recomended the DVD in my first reply to this thread.

You can most likely use any distro you like on this server, but to get the option for bigmem in the installation program, then i could only think of Debian DVD.

Even if you install from the CD you can easily add a bigmem kernel later with apt-get, but to make all the standard kernel modules working correctly you will need a config script, so once again its easier to install bigmem in the first place.

Hello, Thanks to all of you -

Hello,
Thanks to all of you - for your help & Advice

Really is appreciated !

I have: Nero 6 Reloaded
The last time i downloaded an iso image i used nero to burn it to disk and it worked ok without incident.Quite easy to use in all fairness.

@Thunder...Good shout there with regards to the net install:
debian-40r3-i386-netinst.iso

The server may be/have an: HP 8x 2.8ghz HT Xeon but it only 32bit/x86.

So a 64bit version wouldn't work i guess?

Right i finally have the right iso image - i'll burn that to disk and see what happens. When i restart the server.

As this version is net install all the missing/required elements will automatically get installed durin/after the above installation start.

With the net install will: bigmem kernel also get installed or will i have to do it later/seperate with apt-get ?

I put yellow dog linux 6 on a PS3 and found that to be quite easy to do i then used the update feature to make sure that all's well and up to date etc.

So fingers crossed

Kind Regards,

John

No it will not work, I'm sorry, I thought that it was a 64bit machine but fortunately th3 told you the solution. Good luck!
