It gives you a warm fuzzy feeling that you are contributing to a worthwhile scientific endeavour, that, given a lot of good luck, just may add one small piece to that massive jigsaw we call the universe :). Apart from that... not much really.
However, if you want the real answer, you would go to the front page FAQ and click on the link to Paul D Buck's documentation website where you could easily spend literally hours reading all about it and every other conceivable detail about anything to do with credit or anything else Boinc related for that matter. The information on that website is very much like our universe.... a wonder to behold.
So in other words, it physically does nothing, rather a way to gain the support of many pc users. Seems kind of pointless doesnt it. Does the biggest "Creditor" get a prize or an honourable mention? or some sort of novelty keychain?

Yep.... You are speaking heresy of course but that's just about it... :).

Nope.... (Well maybe the honourable mention in dispatches....) It's quite amazing what we so-called, top-of-the-food-chain-humans will do to chase the sight of rapidly accumulating numbers. However, don't think too much about it.... Just start crunching, dammit :).
Edit: Just did a quick check and your credit is still a big fat Zero!!! What's wrong with you!!! Get crunching man.... And you're a bloody aussie too!!!
:) ;).
What is credit?
