RE: It's my sister's

It's my sister's laptop, not mine, so it is a thousand miles away at the moment. It also happens to be a Toshiba, not a Dell. However, it came with 2GB of RAM and was formated when my dad put Vista back on. Not only does it still have the original problems with Vista, but now it occasionally "loses" drivers for the wireless card. There was no speed or stability benefit. This isn't as bad as the laptops belonging to some of my friends that tend to "lose" Nvidia drivers or crash their Nvidia cards altogether, but it is still a pain.

Nvidia came out with updated drivers, finally, for Vista, tell your friends to go to their website and look. They have been out for awhile now.

Somewhat as a voice from the wilderness. . .

I like Vista.

I like the animated graphic! :-)

My first computer was a laptop that came with Windows 98...

... new laptop that had Vista. Oh, Dog, I hated it. So much new stuff to learn...

After a time of learning, I figured Vista out a and learned to appreciate it’s particular strengths and adapt to its weaknesses.

I recently installed Ubuntu (Linux) on one of my machines. Oh, Dog! How I hate it. So much new stuff to learn. . . Well, you get the idea.

People do seem to be highly resistant to change and resistant to learning new things even when the new things let you do more or do things more easily or just let you keep up with the change of times.

This is where the use of Microsoft-only software in schools is so insidious...

One particular OS is far more heavily Marketed and user intrusive than all others. A good OS should be good enough that it is never noticed, because it just quietly and simply works.

Can we teach people how to learn less painfully, and with any "dogs"? ;-)

And, btw, I am dreading the release of Windows 7. Oh, Dog, I am sure that I am going to hate it, so much new stuff to learn. . . :o)

You can enjoy that any time you like and as often as you like with the very wide choice you have for Linux distros!

Have fun!

That should be adopted as the guiding priciple for BOINC, too.

Too late for that. One person is scrapping their computer already and the other just had the card crash so badly that he had to have the whole card replaced. They are both engineering physics majors who do IT work anyway, so I don't have to keep them informed about computer updates. They are already aware of what goes on.

Oh sorry to hear they could not get it fixed, must be really bad! Hey if they are planning on putting the old pc out for the trash man, or recycling it, tell them the local Dept of Family Services would love to have them for their foster kids. I do that with all of my old, 1ghz or more, pc's and the kids love it because they finally have something to call their own! The Foster Care and Adoption section is who I deal with and they love me. Last year I gave 10 pc's and refurbed about 10 more. I have already refurbed over half a dozen this year. I put Ubuntu Linux on the pc, version 8.04, since it just works. Of course I wipe out the drive first with a program called D.B.A.N or Darik's Boot And Nuke. It wipes a drive by writing first 1's, then zeros, then 1's again on every little space of the drive, making data retrieval impossible. Just a thought.

I hope your friends have also been trying the new Windows7. I personally like it, but it is not bug free, so I still would not suggest it for a main line pc. Although their are people that have wiped out Vista and are using Windows7 exclusively!

His problem was that the thing consistently started to crash within minutes of being repaired, so he just had them replace the card since it was under warranty. He's been playing around with Windows7 on another computer. The other guy is switching over to a Mac. I have no idea what he did with his computer.

Then, they probably also know that nVidia have had major problems with defective solder joints, especially in laptops.

For the time being, I'm avoiding anything nVidia like the plague.
