The reason that some hosts

The reason that some hosts will not see a large increase in processing time is because S5R4 is now able to automatically use the most optimised version for a particular CPU type. The S5R3 application did not use the most optimised version automatically so only those people who downloaded the most optimised version and configured an app_info.xml file experienced the increased efficiency.

The host example you gave ("this result list") is a SSE2 capable computer running Linux. It was not using 4.49 SSE2 optimised version under S5R3 but the default 4.38 version, It would now be using optimised SSE2 Linux version (einstein_S5R4_6.02_i686-pc-linux-gnu_2) under S5R4.

My SSE2 capable computer running Linux has completed 3 S5R4 work units. They took 8.25 hours, 5.22 hours and 4.95 hours.
10 work units of S5R3 using version 4.49 SSE2 gave work unit run times of between 2.67 hours and 3.38 hours. Average was 3.13 hours.

S5R4 grants 182.84 and average cr/hr is 29.8. S5R3 granted 237.42 and average cr/hr was 75.9.

29.8 cr/hr is the lowest credit rate of the 8 different projects I have contributed to in the last 3 months.
As an example Climate Prediction gives 62.8 cr/hr on this Xeon 3350 @ 3.36GHz.

Those who are interested in the science alone will be pleased that their computer is now contributing more efficiently to this project by automatically making use of the most optimised application for their CPU type.

This is an interesting project with excellent feedback and help from the project developers and a wholesome spirit of shared discovery. I would like to contribute to it again some day.

RE: A slight credit

A slight credit reduction in comparison to S5R3 is intended to bring E@H back in line with other major BOINC projects like SETI.

What then if Seti is over-crediting itself by 15% compared to yet other projects? Doesn't that throw the need for this out of the window? ;-)

Apologies for the interruption.

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...
