If it crashes and corrupts the client_state.xml, then BOINC will re-attach to projects, creating new host IDs for the same host.

Not any longer. Come 5.4.0 the client_state.xml file will be checked upon startup. If it's found to be corrupt, the backup file client_state_prev.xml will be used. It's working like that in 5.3.21 (I tested it).

As long as you stick to the same brand of OS (so that the same BOINC binary still runs), then you should be able to replace all of the hardware and still use the same host ID. And continue your work for projects as well.
..........[snip]........

OK! That's the most important thing I'm looking for 8-) Thanks.

Um, what about changing from Win XP Home SP2 to Win XP Pro SP2??

That as well. As I wrote: as long as you can run the same binaries (BOINC and project application), you can do whatever you want and will still be able to continue crucnhing the same work units.

If you make changes that don't allow you to continue running the same binaries, then you will loose something. Downloaded work units at least, in worst case also host IDs.
