FYI: I can't reproduce that behavior using Safari. Both previews have the expected yellow background, so it's a browser-dependent CSS issue. The title isn't shown in the new topic preview, but again, it was probably never intended to.

I think I found the cause. There is a bug, if users select "Newest Post First" in their community preferences, then the preview does not work in the way described by Archae86 and Christian. It seems to be browser independent. It's on the fix-list and hopefully won't be a complicated bug to correct.

Before the next SSL record

Before the next SSL record exceeds the maximum permissible length, let me put this one in.

Moderators don't show up as moderators, their title is missing. Same goes for all other project people, one has to know who's who, there's no visual recognition that someone works for this project, or is a volunteer.
If you don't feel titles matter, make the special people's window with the name & avatar a different colour, or make their name a different colour. Or you could ask them to use an avatar that shows them as being a moderator.(*) And add to Moderation (At the bottom of each page) who is in your moderation crew.

Something for the colourblind to figure out. Who came up with these colour schemes?

After every new sentence that I started, once I use Enter to switch to a next line this causes me to lose my blinking cursor in Firefox, I have to click in the window to reacquire it. I can continue to type, but that doesn't show the cursor, the letters just show up out of nowhere. (Why does using Enter throw in a white-line and start of new paragraph, while when one wants to just go to a next line one has to use SHIFT+Enter?) Every Enter adds a white-line which stays even when you backspace to the previous line.

Messages in response to other messages don't really stand out that they are in response to the other message. The whole top text of each post being a dull grey only doesn't help in this matter. Can't you put answers to a specific post in-line with that post, or else show "in response to message N" in a different colour, with the link to the post-number being one recognizable as a link?

Search is broken. I checked for comments on the 'moderator' title being missing and find things like this:

That's a thread from 2006, but as I see it, it shows as being from 2016. ALL top subjects show as being from 08/04/2016 but are from way way earlier dates. Is the notation 08/04 American or European?

And about that: Time zone in preferences, it just shows "Wednesday, September 14, 2016 - 08:17 +0000" for me, without explaining to me what we're offsetting against. GMT, UTC, Zulu, star date? The notation of it seems to indicate we're all using American notation. And then I can't find anywhere in the options to change that, if I want to.

I wonder if showing the weak account key and the strong account key in the relative open of the account->credentials is such a good idea. Can't we at least have it under another page, or preferably even a second login?
How are these secured in the database? When someone hacks you and takes all the information (because it's not a question of if anymore these days), what will they be able to take home?

(*) Gravatars still don't work. My previous avatar that was loaded here was a Gravatar, that you have loaded it perhaps as an avatar is not something of my doing, I have been using a Gravatar at BOINC projects since I figured what they did. The avatar you see on me is not the one associated with my Gravatar for this email address. I have just removed the avatar, reloaded the page and plop, it's back. I do not use an avatar, I use one and the same Gravatar everywhere. Before someone figures it's a function of the third party cookie, I am still not allowing those.

Besides, all other projects allow you to upload an avatar, but switch to a Gravatar without having to manually remove the avatar first. I don't see why this project couldn't do so, why the user has to manually remove the avatar before checking the Gravatar check-box? One can only use one or the other, not both simultaneously.

Android:

A forum index here as I see it on my phone in Chrome, in ratio as to how I see it. Hands who can read it. And indeed, how does one click on any title?
Different browser then? Well, Dolphin has its own problems, as shown here:

It does show the index better, but not by much.

So for the mobility of this site, it hasn't much improved on the smartphones and other smaller handheld devices. (This is on a 5 inch display Huawei G700 @ 720x1280). I mean, let's compare that to the BOINC forums, in the same ratio. Were they really that bad?

The only upside I see here is that when eventually you have found the post you're looking for and you managed to click its link, that the text therein could be legible - although that also depends on the browser and whether you have auto-fit-in-page or auto-resize on and things like that.

That's already on our TODO list. In the meantime I ask our moderators to use a proper signature.

I can't reproduce that in Safari. FF on a Mac (50.0a2 dev edition) does indeed lose the cursor after ENTER but does show it again once you type, no extra window-click required. It's browser-dependent and we're not able to tell who's to blame here.

Because there's a difference between a paragraph and a line break (HTML). The keys/shortcuts used by the WYSIWYG editor (TinyMCE) are pretty much standard for that purpose.

We didn't want to stray too far from what BOINC did originally in this matter. We could even have opted for a threaded view instead of a simple chronological one but that would have changed things to much and complicated the layout. In a chronological view users are required to quote properly to provide context. We add additional header info (incl. a link) for convenience only. The other, less important link color is used throughout the page.

Unfortunately that a result from an import bug where the original post create date didn't get imported and instead set with the import date. We're looking into ways to fix that. The format is American: MM/DD/YYYY

The time offset follows ISO 8601. You may change it in your account's community preferences.

Not sure what "relative open" means. You're the only one having access to it. What other page? It already is on a dedicated page. FYI, BOINC also shows both keys.

We use the standard BOINC database to store user details. Please refer to the BOINC developers for inquires about standard BOINC features (e.g. security).

We don't import Gravatars as avatars. Are you 100% sure your old E@H account didn't use an uploaded avatar?

Allowing both to be set is confusing and requires the precedence rule to be described. Thus we keep it simple and ask you to clean up before you move (which also removes unused files from our server).

We never said the current site has. We said we laid the foundation for those improvements to be possible at all and our next big (web-related) project will be to build upon that.

Forum links are in blue, so why can't the number over the link to the post which is being responded to be blue?

Simple, I searched the forums for anyone else having noticed that the moderator titles (and others) were missing from people with such an account, and couldn't find anything. Of course with a bug in the search putting all imported threads on the same import date and putting those at the top of the search, it's going to be very difficult to do a proper search anyway.

Advanced search not being available, and a simple search of "moderator title missing" (without quotes) generating 209 pages with information is off putting to say the least. The same search with quotes yields

I wasn't asking if I could change the time zone, I know that I can change that. The ISO page you link to says specifically Time offsets from UTC, but nowhere on the preferences page does it say that the time zone is offset to UTC, or does it give a link to this ISO explanation.

I was asking if I could change the time and date notification from the American notation to the European one.

BOINC shows them on a separate page from the main account page.

That I am the only one with access to the page shouldn't matter, I could mistakenly have left the browser open on and gone to the toilet, so someone else could look in at that time.

That BOINC doesn't offer any extra security either, as the keys are only one further click away, should also not matter in this case. You're not using the BOINC forums or code, you're developing something new. You are trying to do things different from the BOINC software, but then when pointed out something, you point back to BOINC doing things in the same manner. Or that you didn't want to stray too far from what BOINC did originally in this matter, but don't notice you have strayed away from that.

It's quite confusing and now comes across to me as if you're not sure what direction you want to go into. It also feels (to me) as if you're not too interested in (my) help on debugging this site, or that you know so much is broken and don't want to fix it all, but instead that you want to wait out for the new next thing.

No, I can't 100% sure say that the avatar I used here previously was a gravatar, because I cannot check that any longer and it was many years ago that I set it. But since my avatar at many other BOINC projects is a gravatar, and also has been for many years I wouldn't know why I would've left it here as an uploaded avatar.

Oliver Bock wrote:

Yes, that worked. Not intuitive, especially not as the Use Gravatar was already checked and when you then click on the Remove of the avatar and save changes, it doesn't take and reverts back to the avatar. But alas, my new avatar is here, so scratch that. (I still can't read the text on the green bar though that probably tells me that I changed my preferences correctly.)

Oliver Bock wrote:

All it says on the Gravatar option is: Gravatar will not be shown if an avatar is uploaded. That may be enough information for you, but it certainly isn't for me. Gravatar uses a direct link to the image at the gravatar website, so I don't even know why I would have to remove the uploaded avatar from your web site before you allow me to click the Use Gravatar option and save that.

So why can't you allow the gravatar to take over and remove the uploaded image from the server when Use Gravatar is checked and changes to the site are saved? Why the double work required of removing an image first, save the changes, then check the Use box to go use an image link to an external website, and save changes again?

Why keep alive the option to Upload an avatar now that I am using a gravatar? We can't use both. I showed that.
Why not disable (grey out) the Upload an avatar section or hide it, as long as I use the gravatar and put a line there "As long as Gravatar is in use, Use avatar is disabled."?
Similarly when an avatar is in use, why not disable (grey out) or hide the gravatar option and state "As long as an avatar is loaded, Use Gravatar is disabled."?
Now you're just confusing.

Quoting. Either allow for all quote boxes to sport the original poster's name, or don't. I have now labouriously added all quote= for what you said and what I said originally. That can probably be done easier.

Drupal does though:

Can we also get an option to set our own font size? You're using font-size 0.75em = 12px with font-family: "DejaVu Sans",Verdana,Tahoma,sans-serif. I really have to squint here, because your forums override my Firefox settings of Serif,Arial,Arial,Courier New at 16px.

My last thing I see here is that we don't jump to the next new post in the thread, we don't have an option for that in the preferences either. I see Kathryn reported that 5 Aug 2016. Cannot be fixed?

Better do this one

Better do this one separately, because of the rather long link...

When previewing a post, the rest of the thread is showing at the bottom. When you now click on any of the next page links at the bottom, for example because you want to read part of the thread in a new tab, one gets:

Because there's a difference between a paragraph and a line break (HTML). The keys/shortcuts used by the WYSIWYG editor (TinyMCE) are pretty much standard for that purpose.

For myself, compared to other places I hang out, this behavior here, as seen on Firefox and Chrome running on Windows 10, differs from that I get elsewhere.  And I don't like it.

But I imagine I can learn to hit Shift+Enter when I don't want a extra unrequested blank line.  LIke this.
But it will take repeated negative feedback in the learning cycle.  And the habit will not be portable elsewhere.   Yes, I actually used a model 33 teletype in logic lab in college (in 1969) and know the difference between CR and LF.  But I am NOT asking for two line feeds when I just press the enter key.  Grumble.

Forum links are in blue, so why can't the number over the link to the post which is being responded to be blue?

The other header links are grey (bold/capitalized) and so too are other less important ones like "ignore user" or "send message". It's just a design decision to make less important links stand out less and be less distracting that way. That's all there's to it.

Simple, I searched the forums for anyone else having noticed that the moderator titles (and others) were missing from people with such an account, and couldn't find anything.

Ok, got it.

but nowhere on the preferences page does it say that the time zone is offset to UTC, or does it give a link to this ISO explanation.

True. However, I'd say that most people who bother will just set it to their local time, regardless of the exact format specification. That why the time is shown at all, in a timezone drop-down.

I was asking if I could change the time and date notification from the American notation to the European one.

Not that I'm aware of.

That I am the only one with access to the page shouldn't matter, I could mistakenly have left the browser open on and gone to the toilet, so someone else could look in at that time. That BOINC doesn't offer any extra security either, as the keys are only one further click away, should also not matter in this case.

Well, if I've access to your open computer and you're logged in (that's the state we discuss here) I can also just log out, request a password reset, take your mail client, follow the link and change your account's password. Easy, in no time. But I see what you're trying to get at: we could add a password request before showing it.

I have to disagree as you over-generalize and also ignore the respective contexts in which I said the things you just quoted.

It also feels (to me) as if you're not too interested in (my) help on debugging this site

We really are, despite the sarcasm and condescension (no need for those at all) coming alongside your otherwise useful comments. But please keep in mind that your findings sometimes are your personal opinion and hence not a universal truth. We always have to weigh different opinions and might end up at different conclusions.

or that you know so much is broken and don't want to fix it all, but instead that you want to wait out for the new next thing.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion. We're constantly discussing and addressing the (constructive) criticism we get, something that typically can't be taken for granted. However, apart from different opinions (see above), you might have a wrong idea of the amount of resources we have to work on this. Honestly, ignorance would look quite differently.

(I still can't read the text on the green bar though that probably tells me that I changed my preferences correctly.)

May I ask if you're color-blind? I just checked the message bubble with a CVD simulator again and this particular example even improves when you've got a red or green CVD.

Sorry, but to me #1 is just the opposite of what's in place right now, and #2 is even more or less the same. Anyhow, I added a ticket to revise that workflow to potentially improve it, ideally using some AJAX/JS to avoid the Save round-trips.

I either don't quote multiple levels or I do add the OP.

Exactly, the latest version does. That's why I said that we now have a foundation to build upon.

Only as you long as you have "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" enabled in FF (Fonts -> Advanced).

My last thing I see here is that we don't jump to the next new post in the thread, we don't have an option for that in the preferences either. I see Kathryn reported that 5 Aug 2016. Cannot be fixed?

Sorry, I can't follow you. When/where do you expect that jump?

Thanks,

Sorry, I can't reproduce that, neither in Firefox nor in Safari. I tried the page numbers as well as the "Next" link, all just fine. Does this problem persist?

Sorting out resolution issues

Sorting out resolution issues would be of benefit. Looking at this forum on a widescreen monitor reminds me of the old "letterbox" image on old style TV's, At least that was top & bottom, whereas as this is a waste of space. Cannot see the full post in some instances unless I scroll down.

Going forwards one must at times, but going backwards?
