It seems that your company

It seems that your company proxy does not allow secure (SSL) connections. More information can be obtained from the link to the internal proxy notification. Maybe you need to reconfigure settings. The difference why Seti works is they don't use SSL for file uploads while Einstein does since sometime last year.

I have a similar problem with

I have a similar problem with uploading, not with the transfer data file but with the actual file in my task list.

It claims that the Peer Certificate can't be authenticated with known CA certificates.

It is also claiming that the servers are down and I can't connect to the project.

I have had a problem with WUProp changing to HTTPS from HTTP and I fixed that problem last nightby renaming all instances of HTTP://wuprop.boinc-af.org/ by HTTPS://wuprop.boinc-af.org/ and also downloading and installing the latest CA-Certicate bundle.

This got WUProp going again, but now WCG and Einstein will no longer upload their files to say I have completed the work units, both projects say that their servers are down, when they are not.

Any help appreciated.

Running Windows XP and Boinc 6.12.43.

Thanks

Hi Conan, you should enable

Hi Conan,

you should enable the http_debug option to check why the certificate can not be verified. Can you elaborate on how you installed the latest CA bundle and from where you downloaded it? The best way is to download it from github, copy it to the BOINC data directory and restart the client. WUProp is using a SHA-256 signed certificate too but they probably don't use alternative certificate chains. Both WCG and Einstein use those to ensure compatibility with older windows installations and we are sure it works for version 7.x of BOINC but I haven't tested 6.12 this version might be built with a version of curl that does not understand alternative certificate chains.

 G'Day Christian,

I got the CA-Bundle from https://curl.haxx.se/docs/caextract.html. I am running BOINC 6.12.43 and I can't see anywhere to enable http_debug option, or do I add this to a cc-config.xml file? Although I have been running BOINC for years I haven't got into any debugging  things much. it usually just works.

Just seems strange that after making WUProp work with HTTPS (which it is now asking me to go back to HTTP), that Einstein and WCG both decided that they can't talk to project servers.

It's best if you try with the

It's best if you try with the BOINC ca-bundle from here: https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/raw/master/curl/ca-bundle.crt

If that still does not work with Einstein you should enable http_debug in cc_config.xml as described here: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/client_configuration this should work for 6.12.34 too.

Edit: Christian beat me to it, start with his suggestion and if you still need to enable http_debug then check below.

I don't remember when this feature was introduced it could have been in v7 but try opening Boinc Manager and check under the Options menu, if you have an Event log options entry then use that to enable debug messages in the log, otherwise you'll have to manually create/edit a cc_config.xml file. Check the documentation here.

Thanks Christian and HOLMIS,

Thanks Christian and HOLMIS, I will keep that information at hand.

It got the better of me and I have already completed a reversal of what I had done to get HTTPS working on WUProp and changed it all back to HTTP and re-enabled the old CA-bundle files I had renamed and kept.

Einstein and WCG both uploaded there respective work units and downloaded new work after finally starting to talk to the project servers again.

Things appear to back to "normal" but we will see.

Thanks again for your help.

So the problem seems to be

So the problem seems to be that WUProp is using a root certificate that is not in the old ca-bundle of BOINC 6.12.34 (which is not surprising) to get both working you should try the ca-bundle I linked. If that does not work it seems you can use either or projects but not all.

One word of warning that you may already be aware of. Since XP is end of life, it does not receive updates anymore and there are a lot of open security vulnerabilities through which attackers can gain access to the computer. You should also check if the hardware is still energy efficient. Sometimes it's better to retire hardware when it produces more heat then science.

To get something useful from the log then open Boinc Manager and in the "Options" menu select "Event log options", then select "http_debug" and click OK. After that, on the projects tab click on Einstein@home and then click the "Update" button. Post the log of the connection attempt.
