I agree with Gary too up to the point that some people only crunch for badges, both getting them and improving the ones they have to new levels. IF the Einstein Servers are overwhelmed now then attracting more users is not a good thing, but if Einstein needs/wants new users then badges are a way of doing that. Gary also brought up a good point about the different kinds of work the Project does, getting a volunteer to work with the Einstein Admins to design different badges based on those searches could give some really cool badges that people would really want to have in their collection. And each new search could bring them a brand new badge keeping people hooked on Einstein for quite awhile.
In conclusion to me badges are a good thing, unless they bring too many users to the project that then make it too slow for everyone. It's a lot like credits, give out a ton of credits and all those people seeking credits will flock to any project giving out more than some other project.
I want badges. Einstein@home has the potential to design the best badges and they should. A lot of money & resources are being donated to this charity and the least they could do is acknowledge it with some attractive badges. A few little baubles in exchange for millions.
Personally, badges mean very little to me. I joined Einstein@Home to make a contribution to science. That being said, I would not object to a badge system, if it could be implemented with a minimal amount of effort.
A more attractive certificate would be my counter offer, as this could be done with relative ease. (This idea was suggested in another thread.)
Shawn Kwang gave a very interesting Einstein@Home talk at the 2019 BOINC Workshop. I could have easily listened to his technical talk for another hour. His one and only question was, "What about badges???" His answer was he didn't know and would have to ask someone. Be sure to look at both the slides & video links:
