Well folks, it's not yet officially summer here in south Georgia, USA, and we're already having a big heat wave.
So, though it breaks my heart to do it, I've already started the process of shutting down my computers. All are set to No New Work, and will get turned off once the current workunits are done.
Even with the air conditioning on, having all these computers running makes it impossible to keep the house cool. Last year wasn't so bad, since summer wasn't quite as hot as normal. This year though, looks like it's going to be a different story.
I've had a good run, getting up to number 54 in the rankings and close to 15-million in Cobblestones. This fall, I'll be back to make up for this summer's lost time.
See ya' then.
Ciao,
Donnie

Summer Heat Wave

Hi Donald!
I just powered down my two Pentium III legacy boxes for the same reason. They are in a spot where they can help dry the laundry :-), but that's no longer needed at this time of year.

Well, my most productive machine is my Quad Quad-core Opteron. But, it's also the worst one about heating the place up. It'll be done with its workunits tonight, so that's when it'll get shut down.

I forgot to mention. . .
You've reminded me that I need to do laundry. I mean, it's either that or go to the store and buy a pack of new undershorts. (The life of a bachelor. Ya' gotta love it.)
Also, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who uses computer to dry laundry.

I powered down my a64-x2's a few months back; badly my landlord wasn't thinking about DC heat loads when he sized my air conditioner. I'll be swapping my dual 260's out for a 5850 soon for the same reason.

You're in Albany? I'm just to the east of you, in St. Marys.

Heat wave? Well DownUnda we have 0 - 5 degrees Celsius presently, and the doppler radar shows a 90+ km/h wind/wet/thunder storm due in about 30 minutes. Power lines will go down so I've had disconnected all the home computers from the wall. At work they're sitting behind a high rating UPS, a slab of batteries and an expensive fuse.
Cheers, Mike.
I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...
