A little update on host 198136: This person now has a total of 1786 WU's issued to him. There were 78 cases of "no reply" today. Last WU he returned was on 10/28/06. And, the number of WU's increases with each passing day.
I can't see the logic in taking that many WU's home, when you don't return any results. Or maby even intent not to return results at all? Unless you want to harm the project in some Hacker-like way.
Maby the destribution of WU's should be changed? So all users/members can have an X number of WU's as max. on their computers. And get new WU's according to the number of WU's they return. - Just a thought!
Another thought! - A kind of "Task Force" that takes care of the No Reply WU's. It can't be right, that dedicated users have to wait for months until they get credit for their contribution becouse the same WU(s) have to be send out several times. I have tried that myself.
What would you suggest that Task Force be doing, with what privileges? Having access to internal project database and contacting owners on their emails?

I don't think this is a case of malicious intent, rather a malfunction of a host with a large cache setting essentially on "auto-pilot".
In any event the impact to the project is minimal in that BOINC will just re-issue them when they expire, so the net effect is to just delay things a bit.
As far as delays in granting credit goes, that's just the nature of the game. They happen for a number of reasons, and there's essentially nothing you can do about it. Unless you get a result where more than one host messes up the longest you would have to wait is 1 month (from when you first received the result) and typically it has been less than 1 week extra when my WU partner has "crapped out".
What would you suggest that Task Force be doing, with what privileges? Having access to internal project database and contacting owners on their emails?
As I wrote. A group of users taking care of the "No Reply" WU's, and chrunch them, so they will be done for sure without delaying the project too much. Nothing in the nature of contact to user's, that don't return results.
But as I also wrote, it was just a thought.
Sounds good. If a group like that Ãs started I would volunteer... dunno if two "average" boxes are enough for that, but my turnaround times are okay so maybe I could join...
I don't think there's anything that can be done about it before he notices the problem himself, is there?
I notice he does not belong to a team so his team founder cannot be contacted, but surely Bruce has access to his e-mail addy and could at least give the guy a quick 'heads-up' to have a look at what his machine is up to?
Actually, he does belong to a team and he has 2 'puters on Einstein with a total of about 24-2500 WU's between them. They both are producing nothing except "no reply" messages.
Who knows what has happened. Maybe he's sick, or went on vacation, or ....... Main thing is everyone needs to check on their boxes every once in a while just to make sure they are working correctly. I know there have been times when I wouldn't have the chance to check on these for a day or so, only to find that one or more haven't been returning WU's since I last checked. It's kind of a shock to walk in, check the boxes, and find that there are several hundred returns just sitting there doing nothing.
