Well, I've been at it again.

Well, I've been at it again. Took the drone out to the museum to survey all the coal hoppers stored in the south yards.

I started out to do a nice dramatic sweep southward from the steam storage leads, but as it got farther away from me (thus harder to judge relative distances), I decided I didn't like flying it backwards relative to the direction the camera was pointing. Clip ends with a climb to make sure I was above the trolley wire.

Then I turned it around so I could see where it was going as I flew it down past Yard 15. The second clip starts with the west end of 15 and pans to the east, then follows the coal cars up the lead to where I started. Then it spins around a couple of times, looking at various things.

Thanks.

Did you see me standing there?

I got an email from DJI today, announcing their new Phantom 4. It has forward sensors so it can avoid obstacles (but would it "see" the trolley wire?). There are also enhancements to the automated flying modes and some improvements to the camera.

The video quality from that RCA is quite good. And you seem to have mastered flying it. Did I see an old "steamer" in the 2nd video? I think it had a bell. There is something magical about locomotives that employ connecting rods.

Allow me to expand on that.

Yard 15 has various old cars and switch engines, candidates for restoration "some day" (or not). Lower on the screen, you see a drainage swale and then what looks like a dirt road. This is in fact the grade for the future long version of the Car Line. There would be a track with trolley wire running along the south side of 15 and north along Olson Road, west of barns 14, 13, 11, and 10 (plus the B&G garage). It would go through the Main Street scene (which so far has one building and no street), cross the current Car Line on Central Ave., and rejoin the Car Line at Yard 4 West.

Yard 14 has the storage cars and 13 has more old cars. Barns 14 and 13 are new and not finished (still doing electrical work), and not cleared for occupancy by the McHenry County Building Department.

At 38 seconds, you get a good view of the current south end of the Car Line. The track that goes under the coal cars goes nowhere. On the other side is Boot Creek. We own the land beyond the creek, but have never put in a bridge. If it existed, the switch to Yard 12 would be in this short stretch of track to nowhere. Going straight to the left is the lead to yards 11 and 10. Following the curve to the left is the Springfield Ave. shelter.

The three tracks on an angle are the Steam Service Leads, used for storage of large equipment that no one cares enough about to pay for indoor storage (and a little bit is used for servicing steam engines during the season). The southwestern-most of these tracks is cleared out and used for boarding Thomas in August.

The s-curve track with the hoppers on it is the South Yard Connector, officially opened for service just last year.

At 52 seconds, the long building on the left is Barn 9, with coaches parked on the Car Line next to it. The shorter building beyond 9 is the Steam Shop.

At 1:18, on the right are barns 8, 7, and 6, with 4 and 3 farther off. The low brick building is the diner. The very small white building with the red roof is the signal shop and museum offices. You can see at 1:22 that a couple of hoppers had to be stuck with the coaches. The small white building with the flat roof off by itself is the single extant building of the Main St. scene.

At about 1:27, you can see a long row of shipping containers, used for storage, with the B&G garage at the far end. The staff entrance gate is by the garage. To the left are yards/barns 10 and 11 (and the non-existent yard 12).

At 1:32, I'm the black spec standing in the middle of the grass with the drone controller. My car is behind me in the shadow of Springfield Ave.

At 1:38, you don't really get a sense of just how sharp the curve of the Car Line is going away from the hoppers.

At 1:41, the Illinois Central Highliners are parked on the older lead to the south yards. Pretty much all the open space in this view is material storage (i.e., parts for nothing in particular). In the distance are the two bus garages and to their north Barn 2, the diesel shop.

At 2:25, to the left of the bright yellow passenger car are C&NW 8646 and 8701, which we are storing for UP during the current traffic slump. These are the last two locomotives still lettered CNW, not UP (keeping them that way is apparently the main object of having us store them instead of some yard somewhere where they might get vandalized or repainted Armour Yellow and gray).

At 2:42, the gray car, the yellow baggage, and the rust bomb are used for Terror on the Railway in October. They are in truly awful condition and will never be restored, but their running gear is good enough to use for that.

I'll take the slice, but change the swill to hot chocolate or tea.
